crash helmets required for use on the road (motorcycle helmets) are exempt from VAT because the government dictate you have to use one.

crash helmets used for recreation (racing/track days etc) are NOT exempt from VAT as they are not a legal requirement.

just to make it more complicated -- the Helmet Company in Telford have an offer at the moment on race helmets where they are selling them VAT free as on offer. Just bought one and that means I got a 14.9% discount. A result when race helmets are rarely discounted and a decent one is so expensive.

What's the difference between a motorcycle helmet and a trackday one?

Can't they perform the same task, hence saving the VAT?

Erm..... 17.5 divided by 117.5 is 14.9!!!

I think its if the helmet is BS approved that it becomes VAT free
