hi all , my first post on pistonheads .... I have just sold my s2 elise
and bought a cheap mx5 with which i intend to venture on to track with (i wanted something cheap that i would not care about hence elise sale) I am fairly used to motorsport as i am a keen karting competitor in the club 100 championship.
My query is how concerned should i be about my car on track regarding its brakes? anybody here track a standard mk 1 mx5? Be good to know what people would suggest in terms of upgrades - current idea is to spend 500 quid on some GAZ coilovers. any suggestions re brakes?

Have you got a 1.6 or 1.8 MX5?
The brake upgrades tend to go:
Upgrade to pads - Axxis Ultimates are great road and track pads for a light car like the MX5.
If a 1.6 car, you can use the calliper brackets and discs from a 1.8 (use the same callipers) to get a slightly bigger disc and slightly better braking.
Either 1.6 or 1.8, you can get hold of the brakes from a Mk 2.5 Sport which are bigger still, both pad and disc size.
The final step would be to a big brake kit - something like willwoods or HiSpec to give you a 4 pot brake calliper and 2 piece disc.
In your position, I'd put some Axxis pads in with some Goodridge braided hoses and decent super dot 4 brake fluid and see how you get on. If you start fitting cup tyres then you might want to consider moving to bigger brakes to give you the extra power the stickier tyres can cope with, but pads and fluid will give you a nicely sorted braking system. As the MX5 isn't endowed with all that much power, you don't want to be braking much anyway.
Suspension wise, you can get both the Gaz and the Performance5 PureDrive suspension for around 500 notes. I do not yet have a set of PureDrives, but will be getting them to replace my Gaz setup.
Give Phil a call at Performance5 and he'll happily sell you any of these bits and advise on the best course of action.
