I'm looking for a road legal wet track day tyre for my Porsche 968. I've got slicks and regular road tyres, but want a tyre for wet uk circuits and also for the 'ring. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, the a048rs are expensive in the right sized tyre (those in particular seem to increase exponentially in price). I have a mate who runs the Donlops, and they're great for dry weather grip, and whilst I've not tried them in the wet, there's very little tread on them.

I'm really wondering if they R888 is any good in the wet, and also if anyone's tried the Federals, as they have a 1b track day tyre which is heavily treaded.

I can't comment on how R888s would be on your car but they were alright on mine in rain at Oulton last year. Better than you'd think in fact. I wasn't tempted to swap for road wheels.

What size front and rear are we talking about?

Nothing overly silly:

235/40 18 on the front
255/35 18 on the rear

R888s are pretty good in the wet for a trackday tyre, but they aren't wets and don't clear standing water very well. If its wet but no standing water they heat up pretty quickly (upto a point) and then grip well. If its proper cold it can be hard to get any heat in though.

Depends when you want them. Toyo have the RA1 and R1R out in some countries, just don't seem to be that easy to get in the UK yet.

i thought the 968CS had 17" rims and the norm 968 16" ers

using the 48r's inthe wet was interesting, i up'ed the pressures to account for the fact they wouldnt get hot due to the amount of water and the day temp. I was quicker on those than other people who had chosen fully treaded road tyres. lots of standing water relativly wide tyres 185 60 13 on a fairly light car meant i could spin the wheels in 3rd along the start finish straight.

Yep - the CS and Sport had 17" as std.

I've got 2 sets of the std 17" rims, with Road Tyres and Slicks on. However I've also got 18" which are the rims I'm wanting to put the wet track day/ring tyres on.

The 968 Turbo and RS had 18" wheels, and there's the usual compromises running them, but no reason there's a problem.

On those sizes I reckon R888's are the way to go.

You can always re-groove them if you want to optimise wet performance.

in the wet i think you'll generally want a more compliant set up, thus running larger wheels and lower profile tyres is the exact opposite to this, it might be worth getting another set of std CS wheels
