I would steer clear of airfield days, they may be a bit cheaper, with nothing much to hit,but if you care anything about your car,the car will end up with alot of stone chips, and tyre wear can be very heavy on the mainly concrete surface,A good track for a 1st trackday would be bedford autodrome, plenty of run off,one of the safest tracks in the UK,so long as your car is not too loud you should be ok.

Dont be put off by airfield days..... My first outing was at an airfield day and despite not being the fasted car there (I was the only Porsche amongst loads Caterham/Westfields) it was a pretty good initiation. I was getting upto 110 at the end of the straights whilst the Cater/Westies were upto about 125 - plenty fast enough for me!!
Loads of runoff which gives you confidence as a first timer, the track is inspected prior to the start so there shouldnt be loads of crap on it, tyre wear depends on how aggressive you are with the steering, brakes and power.
My day consisted of the group being split into three sessions, as a novice i was in the third group, then an open pit lane for the rest of the day. You could go out as many times as you felt able to.
Also the total numbers are smaller as there is a little bit of snobbery concerning airfield versus trackdays. You also tend to get more tracktime than a sessioned trackday.
I went with MSE trackdays who are relatively cheap but well organised.

Do you mean actually get up close to the top speed your car will do, if so it's not really a track day you want, rather something like VMAX or Fighting Torque type event - there are relatively few tracks where you will hit hugely big numbers as far as top speed goes.quantum30 said:

I suggest you come to RAF Marham's track day in April its a fantastic 3-4 mile track with one straight which is 1.3 miles long. It has some tricky corners and the biggest run off areas going, its cheap, and you get everything from ferraris to clapped out sierras coming down.
Just do a search for Marham on Youtube for the track layout and pistonheads is usually provided with 50 spots per weekend. Its a thoroughly laid back event which is well organised and only costs £70 for one day or £120 for both.
Its perfect for beginners wanting to push there cars to the limits.

just done woodbridge airfield on the 18th october.
Good points : Great for novice, lots of run offs, fast runway section, very nice and friendly people
Bad points : stone chips on windscreen (lots of little ones ) front tyre went bald on varying surfaces, only porta loo for toilet
Someone suggested bedford autodrome which has great run offs so no need to worry about concrete walls or armco.
I would go to woodbridge again but with some part worn tyres
hope this helps
