I have two spare wheels with matching tyres but they are both for the same side. If I put both on the back does anyone know how much difference it will make for a novice trackdayer?

Cheers

Personally I wouldn't... water clearance won't be right so if it rains it could be dangerous, and some tyres can de-laminate if you run them wrong (or so the story goes).

Just pay Kwikfit (or better still a local independent) to swap the tyre onto a wheel for the other side of the car.

What tyres are they? I once complained to a tyre manufacturer about how poorly their tyres had worn at a trackday and they suggested putting them on the wrong way round to even up the wear. But this was a semi slick so no tread blocks to squirm around.

think about the asymetric tyre, the tread is 'right' on the outside on side and 'wrong' on the other, they still seem to work ok??

You get normal, assymetric and directional tyres. Only directional need to go around in a certain direction. It will be marked on the side so check that but as a rule of thumb, if you have a V type pattern on the tyre it is probably directional and care must be taken when fitting them after a trackday 4 wheel swap for instance. Normal & assymetric can go on either side...
