whats the best track car ?
Discussion
On the (pretty gross) assumption that you're not trolling:
1. As a pure track car, it has to be the R500. But you know that so don't ask silly questions.
2. If you need to drive it there and back, either the 968 or Elise. I went for the Elise so I'm biased. S2 111s is a bit of a funny choice as a track car though - aren't they the lardiest of the K lot? 968 is tempting, but heavier and costlier to run and arguably not as much fun.
3. I personally think MX5s are a bit pish and think you'd get bored in no time unless you're going to start modding it, in which case you might as well start with something better in the first place, but I'm in a minority of one.
You should know all this anyway and you won't listen to a word as you have your own firm views based on more experience than me...just buy them all one after another and report back with your findings.

If you want to use it on the road as well I've recently decided Honda Elise/ maybe VX220 turbo / Audi Elise, (not a low power varient Elise) before that I thought MX5 with huge turbo. Until I'd been in the Honda Elise I had not thought any non-caterfield as good as the turbo MX5 on track. I'm a rather crap driver and the turbo mx5 has allowed me to blast past 99% of other cars on track (many caterhams included), a 968 Porche couldn't come close, slow heavy barge in comparison.
Stock engined mx5 does quickly get boring, however if your price bracket is 968 Porsche / Elise money then really you can easily afford to build a very fast (circa 250bhp) MX5.
Why include the R500 its multiples of the cost of your other suggestions?

guys not trolling
just interested what people think
why should teh R500 automatically be the best
for many it would be too quick... and for many hakf the fun is mixing it with similar paced cars
for some peole teh best trackcar might be the one that provides the best feedback/interactivity per pound so on that basis the cheap MX5 might win hands down

Fair enough, but you asked the question in absolute terms and for most people I suspect the R500 wins hands down in absolute terms as a track car.
You've spent quite a bit of time looking at mx5s and elise variants recently from what I've seen. Give either a go - either way if you don't like it you'll be able to sell it for roughly what you paid at the end of the summer so you've got nothing to lose. My money would be on the elise as something which gives good fun per pound and will keep you entertained. It's also a slightly different driving proposition from most cars you've had before from what I've seen, which you might enjoy a bit more?

Well, I'd say MX5 becuase I bought one as a track car because;
a) I've only just started track days and hence my track driving ability / experience is low
b) I'm not flush enough at the moment to spend much money on this hobby
c) It's a simple car to work on and improve
d) It's civilised enough for wifey to use as a fun weekender
Suits my needs, but doesn't mean it's everyones idea of the best track car though..
