Same could be said about the MK2 MR2. Bigger power, same layout, cheaper outlay.

I guess people don't like ripping the guts out of a Porsche.

Dont think its people not wanting to rip the guts out of porsches. Plenty of 964s done, not many 993s. Note also plenty of 924s, and 944s.

i think the boxster is just reaching that age, where it is all fair game. Not they are below 10k to pick up, they become much more accessible for stripping. The 2.7s and 3.2 are still a little pricey perhaps, and a bit new to warrant pulling apart. But it will come. Wait until after the 2010 boxster race series kicks in. All of a sudden they will become fair game.

i am thinking they are becoming fair game. i dont like the look of them personally, but it ticks all the other boxes for a track car. the 'expensive parts' story also puts me off a little.

Heavy, expensive to run on track, not that fast. Much better options out there for £10k (before you've even started modifying).

Bottom end 968CS
Properly prepared 944
Track-ready elise/VX220
Properly prepared e30/e36
Cheap Caterham Roadsport
High spec generic Westfield/7 clone
Old Clio Cup car/race spec generic hatch

etc etc, and that's ignoring a lot of much cheaper machinery.

Take your pick - all would be better to drive and run on track than a bottom-end Boxster IMO

exculding the front engined and fwd cars, the vx 220/elise is the only comparable there, and they both come with smaller engines.

I have an exige s at the moment, and i am purely tracking it. i have had a couple of 'close ones' and my thinking was that if i was in a car that was considerably cheaper, i would be able push the limits more. one thing i miss about the 350z i had before was the 'manly' engine noise, so was looking around, and wondered if there qwas something glaring i was missing about the boxster. Although, a car at even 10k, before mods is going to be an expensive track car.

(i was looking at miatas last night, have you seen what they can do to them??? wide boy kits and turbo chargers!?! 250-300 hp? 5k all in??)

And way faster than most people give credit for once setup properly.

and unfortunatley also capable of getting you into a lot of trouble very fast if the turbo comes in mid corner and your not ready for it...

The turbo is half the fun. Very difficult to drive, but once you know how to not much will keep up with you on track.
