Track Car insurance
Discussion
Got a couple of grand I could throw at a novice track car, but i'm being put off by the cost of insurance for it. I'm only looking at an Mk2 Astra GTE 16v (part track/fun car, part as a bit of a restoration as i've got a soft spot for them), but the insurance is coming out to about £1k and that's before I start to modify it! Are there any companies that can be reccomended that specialise in very low mileage policies? The £1k was even on a classic car policy
.
.making modifications can really bump up an insurance premium. For a dedicated track car it is definitely worthwhile looking at motorsports insurance companies. There are quite a few companies that specialise in insuring rally and race cars. Although I havent got a quote from them, I have a leaflet for www.raceinsurance.co.uk and I would suggest you give them a call.

at 30+yrs it was no grief getting a fully modded caged & track prepped 190bhp mk2 Golf insured for about £140pa
That's it - you make me feel better at 30+yrs it was no grief getting a fully modded caged & track prepped 190bhp mk2 Golf insured for about £140pa

I'm 24 with 6 - nearly 7 years NCB, but obviously I can only use that on one car, and i daren't even try quotes on mine without my NCB on it! I'll try the motorsport place - cheers for the info.
ETA - would 1000 miles be enough? not sure exactly how it's worked out, but roughly speaking 1000 miles could be clocked up on 5-10 trackdays depending on the circuitlength/speed of circuit and speed of car (eg roughly a 2 minute lap of donny's 2 mile circuit - 20 minute sessions, 7 sessions during a day = 140 miles before you've even driven there). Could be a pain to try and justify if yo ever need to make a claim.

Thus I only paid £300 to insure a BMW E30, fully tack modified. They were also the cheapest for the S4 as well. Worth giving them a ring.
I'd wait another year - once you're 25, people like Hagerty Insurance would insure you on classic car policies.
To give you some idea, as a 25 year-old guy with 3 years NCB, I was paying £186 p/a fully comprehensive, 5000 miles limit with a 50 quid excess on a pre-modded 944 S2 valued at £2k. With the valuation up'd to £10k post-conversion into a track-focused road car (cage, coil-overs, new brake, bucket seats & harnesses), it's still only £310 p/a.

Sadly not. Hagerty used to insure people from 21 I think (I started with them at 24), but they've just upped it to 30 for new customers. They can also have issues with major mods too. Well worth trying if you're, err, more mature, though as the prices are spectacularly good.Quick question on the subject of insuring track cars (which may well be relevant to the OP) - if you insure for 1,000 road miles does that mean you have to disconnect the speedo for track miles? If not, if you have to claim on the road and they look at your MOT mileages, will they accept that 75% of that mileage was recorded on track?
I believe Hagerty is fairly relaxed on the track milage, I was just told that track miles are not counted towards the road mileage.
I have heard that some insurers ask for a log book to be kept so you record the mileage when you get to a track, and the mileage when you're done with your track day. Hagerty hasn't asked me to do that, and I haven't done so on the track days I've been on this year.

Yep, track (and offroad events oddly) cover too, but only on ATDO events. Policy was with Chaucer Insurance, and the add-on code for track cover is HH99 (according to the renewal).
Chaucer policies are also available through Richard Egger Insurance - may be worth obtaining a quote from them too, www.richardeggerinsurance.co.ukHTH

Have you tried competition car insurance?
I recently got a policy with them for a fully race-prepared lotus elan, 3k miles per year, 4 track days fully comp cover thrown in for a total of £350-ish. and I am only 23 with no transferable no-claims.
most other companies (including a number mentioned on this thread) were giving quotes of double that.

Will give them a try now
I have just phoned Adrian Flux - they tell me they dont offer trackday insurance anymore??
Also HIC - they want £620 fully comp for both road and unlimited uk trackdays. The excess is £1000 (on track) on a 306 GTI-6 with a non standard exhaust worth £3250 - Im 31 with 10 years ncb, no convictions. This seem's a bit steep on the excess front to me - anyone agree?
A bog standard elephant quote without trackday insurance of course is £340.
Cheers
