Bike engines and track day noise limits
Discussion
Inspired by a recent thread: I could have sworn I'd heard that bike engine installations tend to be too loud for tracks like Bedford (98Db at 3/4 maximum revs), but it seems that might be wrong.
I realise it varies from car to car, but is it realistic to expect a BEC to pass the noise test at places like that and not trigger the driveby sensors?

I Have a fuel injected R1 BEC. I originally rocked a CF Micron bike can. the lowest reading I got at Brands static test was 107.5 db, and the tester wanted to squeeze me on the track!
I managed to get a bung made by a local company near tot he track which reducued me to bang on 105db and I enjoyed a couple of hours on track before the day was over.
I now have a giant 6inch repackable can with a rolled tail pipe. Static at the same track gave me 98 db.
If you can get and install the original airbox thats great. No significat gains are seen with Sauasage filters anyway, however they do fit under the bonnet. Secodnly, a large can will always help.
I choose 105 and 102 days, i think a BEC would have to have a lot of work done to have confidence in taking it to a 98 db day.

Ah, so maybe it is a bit optimistic afterall.
I could have sworn someone on the other thread said they'd had a BEC tested at sub-90 Db (87?) didn't sound right at the time, but I thought I'd enquire.
The two tracks near me are Bedford and, slightly further, Brands. Neither are known for their sense of humour with noise tests, so looks like it's back to car engines. Shame, I was just oggling a really nice Blackbird powered Fisher Fury...

Lost my mojo said:
Bedford is 101db with motorsport vision. Did a day there Monday, with a merlin silencer (well recommended) I got 96, but thats with a 2.0 zetec.
Have seen quite a few becs at Abingdon which is 100db so must be possible to get it below.
Cheers
Andy
I think it varies depending on the time and date - evenings, weekends etc. I'm sure I've seen sessions there at under 100 dB.Have seen quite a few becs at Abingdon which is 100db so must be possible to get it below.

At the risk of straying off topic how do you rate the Mojo as a track car? I'm a closet Sylva fan.

Hi Chris
I fear that I'm starting to sound like a stuck record as I seem to be saying this to people a lot. Look for proven solutions - the best place is often in motorsport. This means:
It can be done.

- An airbox from someone like Andy @ http://www.abperformance.co.uk
- A LARGE silencer from someone like http://www.simpsonraceexhausts.com/ or http://www.tonylawexhausts.co.uk/
It can be done.
