Abingdon 24th July - MSE
Discussion
Can I come down and watch? Bit nervous about having a go but I'm sure this would inspire me to pluck up and get out there. Money is really tight at the moment so I can't really justify replacing the recent budget tyres on the back with anything stickier but I really fancy having a whizz round, and I presume Abingdon is a good first port of call as there isn't so much to hit!
Not that I'd be going mad obviously, especialy seeing as there would lots of other P+J's in close proximity. If its ok then I'll pop down on Friday and get a feel for it. What time does it start?

Hello - I've just bought a 205 GTi 1600 rally car, pretty standard, and was hoping to take it on a track day to learn a bit about it - the 25th Sept at Abingdon fits my diary.
I was wondering if any of you TD experts coudl offer your opinion on Abingdon - it looks pretty fast, would I spend the whole time flat in 5th watching Caterfields pass me?
cheers

It's the only airfield I have personal experience of but it is quite fast along the back straight, but it's main attraction is the corners and chicanes on a very good surface. Hullavington has a very long straight if sheer top speed is your preference. I don't manage more than about 90 at Abingdon (2.0 litre Westfield, not known for high maximum speed but for acceleration and cornering ability) but I am cautious about braking at the end of the back straight because there's less run-off there if the brakes give out than in other parts of the circuit. MSE manage their events well and anyone who drives irresponsibly gets black flagged pretty quickly. One of the rules is not to overtake on corners or even without consent of the car ahead. They will blue flag you if you are holding someone faster up and there's always someone faster...
Duncan,
Abingdon will be fine for a 205, Colerne(nr Bath) is another option that is quite twisty rather than long straights. With an mi16 fitted, we are up to about 110 IIRC at the fastest point. I write IIRC because last time I did abingdon they changed the layout to something a bit faster where we were nudging 115-118. I think it has gone back to the old layout though, which is good news for our asthmatic cars.
Plus it is boring going fast in a straight line, you can generally find yourself some space quite easily so you can link up the track without having to constantly pull over. If you are running on slicks or semi slicks you'll catch the rice rockets up every corner anyhow!

Dunno if anybody has seen the pictures on Richard Sloman's website. Frankly they're not as good as Steve at Photodirect does. These are mostly sideviews and not sorted into car type on the website like PD does. Photodirect does close up front views on corners more than side views - more dramatic.
