what's the story with this GTI then? Does it lap Spa in a spectacular time?

Looks dry to me and a bit of a letdown really...plus he is right everyone else there is very slow, you can tell. I know how fast they are and have done a trackday with their black golf. But that wasn't that fast and didn't look great through the corners either. Very quick in the straight which is what gave it that time...and he looked 1-up? Maybe he didn't know the track? A 2.54 is ok but doesn't flatter that car at all from the stories you hear.

What an amazing bit of cgi footage, none of it is real, the cars being overtaken just simply appear, clever bit of video though.

It says edited footage so it's just several laps spliced together to make one appear more interesting, rather than having sections with no overtakes.

I thought that mk1 got crashed a few years ago - cracking bit of kit. The mk2 they have is awesome too.

2:54 is a good time - about 2 minutes quicker than a standard Mk1 GTI.

I'm assuming this one has a few modifications?

Times are for race test days, not for passenger laps.

Ever put someone in hospital sitting next to you when driving competativly? Don't try it unless you have no feelings. Thats why I don't rally anymore.

Interesting to see a link pop up on PH! The car wasn't there to set times - the organisers had made that abundantly clear to all participants.

The footage was compiled from several sessions on one morning with varying conditions, and spliced together as purely entertainment, to give some insight into a car which is known to many.

The video takes the outer edge off the experience, because the viewer can't sense what the car is doing grip-wise - or feel that it is being subtly adjusted all of the time. Most of it is as brisk as you'd ever want to go, being 2WD, on 7-inch rims, and regularly over 120mph.

The run down to Blanchimont was less than flat out, and with a car sighted ahead on that fast left section, a back off was in order - but that was the best footage we had.

Some will know that Trevor Reeves has a lengthy European rallycross and racing CV and his unflustered approach is very deceptive. All other cars on track were warmed up & I was sat in the Golf - hanging on! - on the mainly-dry single lap.

The Reeves Mk1 has a huge following of VW enthusiasts, though it has surprised everyone that the video has made the US, Oz, and NZ in the space of days.

They weren't timing in the car though, but there is no danger of putting someone in hospital when timing it whilst watching the video.

Are you sure? I've been braggin it was me sat there on that lap. Oh well the 5 laps I had with Trevor on that day will remain in my memory banks until they are erased permanently. Thanks for putting the great video together Chris.

I used to walk past the Reeves cars on the way to school each day and have nothing but admiration for their absolute lust for all things fast. Despite their wealth they seek out Golfs/Skylines for their thrills with the odd exception of that Ferrari they had ! I have never met them but they are the stuff of legend in my house for just being speed obsessed ;-)

There's a mix & match of passengers on the first edited lap - see the different lids - and the second dry lap is definitely myself - I remember the silver 911 clearing out of the way into Stavelot 1!

Pleasure - glad you enjoyed it biggrin

Fantastic!

I think one of the things not obvious about videos is they all make things look slower than they really are. I had a video done of my own Mk1 at the 'Ring last weekend - ex-Reeves 2.0 16V motor in it - and I was surprised how unimpressive the speed looked, even on the straight bits where talent isn't the issue!

Which speaks volumes for this video. This car is epically fast smile
