Track day clothing...
Discussion
It's dependent on TDOs - for example, Motorsport Events ask you to wear long-sleeved tops and full-length trousers if you're heading on track, while MSV only insists on long-sleeved tops in open cars.
Helmets - most TDOs don't have specific minimum standard requirements, and those that do (e.g. MSV) don't check for the Snell/BS label. Spend as much as you can afford, according to what you think your head is worth!
Unless you are actually a racing driver, don't bother with fireproofs - you'd look a bit silly!

There was a thread on here the other day discussing this. Someone came on and said he's recently got burned on a track day. I don't know the circumstances but it does happen.
I'm sure there are people who think I'm a nob in my fireproofs, but I'd rather that than have the gear sitting at home while I barbeque.

I was on a track day last week and a car caught fire...
I guess you'd have to be trapped in it to really need fireproofs? Presumably upside down or slammed against an obstacle?[

I don't wear fireproofs but may do in the future. I think that people who do are just taking safety that bit further, whats wrong with that? It would be the same as using a Hans, its a seatbelt for your head and next to my tackle and drinking arm thats the most treasured part of my body.

Me. Caterham related. I was covered in fuel which was being sprayed at me at 3 bar, which then found the hot exhaust. Luckily I had a full nomex top on and the fuel vapourised pretty quickly, but I have a scar around my wrist where there some exposed skin. I also race, but stupidly didn't wear my overalls that day. I can't imagine what may have happened if I'd been wearing a synthetic top (luckily I don't possess such tat), but it could have literally shrink wrapped me. As to what someone else thinks of what you look like? Are you really that stupid? (comment not aimed at PT btw)
Wait until you've had a car fire related incident to determine what you believe to be 'cool' or not in the driving wear fashion parade.
It also has nothing to do with how hard you're trying on a trackday or what car you're in. The most freak accidents can and sometime do happen.

So would fireproof underwear do the job, with casuals on top?
I'm with Car limits for the day. There is no mention of flame proof clothing, even says a helmet is not required.
Looks like you're doing the driver training day on the 18th. You wont need helmet or special clothing, you'll just be doing various manouvers under instruction from Andy with no other cars close by and loads of run off in case it all goes wrong. Its an excellent day, I've done it, your brain will ache at the end of the day from all of the things you have been told though, have fun I'm with Car limits for the day. Some good pointers here for when you venture out on a 'proper' track day that I don't need to add to except to refer you to a debate a while ago about clothing etc at track days.
Frankly I am staggered that anyone taking part here at PH would think someone would silly at a track day in a race suit. Won't reinvent the wheel but what needed to be said was said in this thread.

I look silly in a tangerine bodystocking and rigger boots. I don't look silly in my race suit. Slow....but not silly!!!!

Whilst the sentiment I suspect you are trying convey is "all the gear and no idea" I would contend that you'd feel far "sillier" sat in the back of an ambulance on the way to casualty knowing you left your Nomex at home because people thought you looked "a bit silly".Never take the piss out of anyone for trying to be safe.

Matt - you got that in one, and I would be the last person to mock those who take safety seriously. Indeed, I insist on having a fair few bits of safety equipment on my track day car.
I guess my point is that while fireproofs, HANS devices etc. are needed for competitive racing, track days are meant to be very tame in comparison and to get yourself into a situation where these things are needed, you would probably have been driving way beyond your limit and/or the spirit of track days.
Or you're very unlucky. I'll be quiet and sit in the corner now...

If you drive an open coffin then you have to i guess be prepared!!Ive lost count of the trackdays i have been on with a Caterham driving round spraying fuel out of the side, indicating constantly and then ending up in the litter before getting soaked by the rain
