Hi folks. I fancy getting into a few track days. I also need a car, what would you reccomend? I'm thinking something I can dive up there, lightweight and costing at tops about 6k.

I saw this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1140690.htm

May be a bit over powered as a beginer...

Your thoughts!

I don't think it's a "bit" over powered - maybe "hugely" overpowered.

If you're interested in those sort of cars, why not hire a caterham from bookatrack for a day & see how you like it?

That engine in a 1200kgs S13 is quick enough to be getting on with, never mind something with less than half the weight!

If you want something a bit more forgiving (because its FWD), you might want to try an Integra Type R. If you want RWD, an Elise is a good place to start. Both built to cope with trackwork straight out of the box and fairly simple mechanically so less to break.

Quite a few around this price, change from 6 Grand for a set of 888s

A little over budget, but looks pretty tidy

But to be honest, if it were my money and I was just getting into track days I would leave 4 grand in the bank and get myself one of these.

This one has been track prepared and would be great to throw about.

I live near brands hatch where, because of the layout of the track, big power isn't that much of a disadvantage. If you are going to be mostly using a track like Thruxton then something with a bit more oomph might be worth a look.

I'd recommend a Ford Racing Puma - awesome track car.

Incredible brakes, sorted handling - plus they look good and don't throw up too many moments on track

Rarity adds to the appeal

I've been in this car and can confirm it's quick (don't know if it's the same chap selling as 18mnts ago when I looked). I decided against buying for 2 reasons:

1) couldn't adjust the seat/pedal box to fit me (6'0) without lots of mods.
2) Due to the custom tuning, it really needed someone who knew a bit about mechanics.
