This one is what i have and fits the bill. Only recommended for 'light' cars though.

Thanks I have been looking at a Sealey jack. I have a M5 among others in my garage but I would not be lifting the whole car so do I really need to have a jack that can lift say 2 ton? As i wouldn't be lifting that much in one go. At most a front or rear, but mainly a corner at a time.

If I wanted to lift the corner of something like an M5, I'd want to use a jack with a certified lifting capacity of 2T. Ruston's suggestion is a nice little jack, but long term or safety-wise, it's not really meaty enough; that's a low entry height jobbie aimed at sUch as Caterhams etc.

AND (however strong it says the jack is), IF YOU EVER GO UNDERNEATH, MAKE SURE YOU USE AXLE STANDS!

I have one of those jacks - it's already been back once under warranty when the seals failed & all the fluid leaked out. The bolts have a tendency to back out as well. It is nice & light though.

- I've been using it to lift half of a 944 turbo, so a fair bit lighter than an M5. I reckon I'm about at its limit. My problem is finding a jack low enough to go under the car...

The Arcan jack available from Costco (c.£80) is a good bit of kit, however it's a low-entry, 1.8T (2 US T) model, so as per the posts above may not be suitable for something like an M5.

I also have a 3T jack by Metalworks - the quality is not that great and the lowest platform height is often too high even for family hatchbacks, so FWIW I would avoid one of these.

As my higher level entry and general use jack, I bought this one about 2.5 years ago, it's been regularly used on several different motors and it's still working as good as new >

Note the price ..... why waste money if you don't need to!

BTW it's strong enough to jack up a corner on my X5 tow car, so a lightweight M5 is not going to phase it.

Nice to be able to say something positive about Halfords (but their twin chamber footpumps are cxxp, even if they are made in Germany)for once laugh

Many thanks all I ordered a Sealey 3 Ton job in the end. Just didn't like reading some of the horror stories. I will get one next year and will get the Sealey 1.5 or the Michelin 1.8.

Again thanks for the input.

I wouldn't recommend the Machine Mart 1.25 tonne jack at all. It failed whilst lifting a friend's Clio 182 and dented the floorpan.

I would highly recommend this though:

It's light enough to transport, has rocket lift, and has not failed us yet (shared between 5 people for track day use).

looks suspiciously like the machine mart jack, just in red...

Which also looks rather like the Cosco one...which costs 10 quid less! smile

I was told that they are all the same jack (low profile entry, 1.5T capacity, motorsport use etc.)...just different branding and different paint-job!
