Nurburgring 22-23rd August
Discussion
2 weeks from now I'll finally be ferrying across to the 'ring
.
Booked in at the Ringhaus. Anyone else going?
What's the Ringhaus like? Many Brits there?
I'm getting all excited (hence the thread), just been buying my stickers and making list of things to do/take before I go.
Any last minute words of wisdom from PH?

As above take it easy.
Its an intimidating place, don't try to chase other cars, however slow you may believe them to be in relation to your car (I don't know what you drive). Don't try to chase or hold off other cars - more than any other circuit knowing the place is the most important thing.
Watch your mirrors and let faster cars past.
Its a public road, so pass on the left only and in general keep to the right.
The ringhaus is fine - fairly basic, decent rooms, decent food a nice bar and lots of Brits. Its very close to the circuit entrance and convenient for the Pistenklause - a must for a first visit.
You may also want to read your insurance policy very carefully - during TF its a public road and a minimum of third part cover is mandatory. Take all your documents with you and have them in the car - I've been stopped twice for documents at the barrier this year.

Agreed. I'll be there in a bright yellow caterham. Please look out for the bikes. No matter how frustrated how get with the (mainly UK) Rossi wannabe's, if they hit the armco for any reason, the odds aren't in their favour.
Remember, it's only a bit of fun for the weekend, and everyone wants to go home on the sunday!
Frank (ringhaus) will also help you out in the event of you having a problem. Does get a certain clientele because of its obvious location, but I'll let you make your own mind up!
Cheers guys.
Insurance is "ok" - at least as OK as it gets. Nothing about Nurburgring etc or public toll roads. Spent ages looking for it.
Driving - don't worry I'll be on my best behaviour. Not generally an aggressive driver even on a hoon. Plenty of space in front and attention to mirrors is how I roll. Coming home in one piece and not having killed/injured anyone is #1 priority. Plus I don't have the added incentive to "beat" anyone there. Flying solo on this one - so no idiot mates to distract me....
Documents - got them all nicely gathered and organised in a pretty folder.
(V5, MOT, Insurance, License, passport - hell I've even got the invoice and service history
)
What's the deal with helmets? Do people generally wear them as a rule? I've always found that they've hindered my vision so don't really want to, an open faced one would be OK, I guess.
Also what about photographers? Looking to get a couple of piccies to take home - are there photographers there you can approach and ask or is it just down to luck whether they take one of you or not?
Do people tend to have their headlights on?
I assume it's OK to indicate to the right when you see someone approaching to let them know you see them and invite them to pass left? Do I indicate to the left when I intend passing? I know it's considered as having two lanes unmarked, but is this quite literal?
What about in left turns? I assume it's OK to move over there assuming the coast is clear?
Pistenklause - is this the place I've been hearing about the steaks?
definitely!
Someone told me that RSR do "Ring-walks". Is this right? Is it a worthwhile experience?

Helmets - up to you; I would recommend you do, personally I do wear one but its not universal.
Photographers - most weekends there are usually a few photographers around, who will post on their websites a few days later - do a search here, there was a thread a little while ago that listed most of the sites. You won't actually see them to chat to as they'll be out on the circuit.
Indicating to the right is perfectly fine and very helpful to let people know you've seen them.
Indicating left when you want to pass is also common though I always feel its a little more aggressive.
If its clear yes you can take the line you want and indeed most people will expect it, just remember if there is an incident AND you were on the left you may be found at fault - observation is everything.
Headlights seems to be about half and half - as I recall there is a sign as you go through the barriers saying headlights on.
Yes the Pistenklause is the steak on the stone place - 10 minutes walk from the Ringhaus.
The RSR ring walks are good but I think you'll find they aren't running at the moment.
Finally if you can get a couple of passenger laps with an experienced ringer this is an excellent introduction.

I will be there that weekend with my brother in the MNR and on the gixxer 750. We are staying in the Ringhaus also.

Many thanks!Here's another one...
How many laps am I likely to get done in a day?
I ask as I intend to buy a several lap card to have half a € or so a lap.
If I've laps left on at the end of the day can I just hand it over to someone a let them use it up or save it for next time? Is the reg # marked on the card stopping this from happening?
Can they really only be credited from a debit card, or will a credit card do equally as well?
and what about...

the ring°card will be the only payment method accepted in the whole of the Nürburgring.
Does this go for the shop as well?Edited by Collaudatore on Saturday 8th August 14:59
cash, credit or debit card accepted
the more laps you buy in one go, the cheaper each lap works out ( the lap prices are on here somewhere)
laps are valid until end of year- use them or loose them ( or sell them to a punter in the car park)
No car/bike reg numbers attached to lap tickets.
The number of laps you do can be limited by the length of the queues and if there are any closures. you could do 8, you may only do 1!

I assume you mean "save" half a euro per lap ...
As said laps are valid 'til the end of the calendar year and are transferrable. The "ringcard" thing is also the lap card and you can transfer cash onto it for use in the diner, which only accepts the ringcard. Cash lasts two years, my advice is not to put too much cash on the card. Not sure what you mean by "shop" but oddly the booth in the car park selling t-shirts and stickers accepts cash ...
Small tip, because the new ring card is a proximity card - you hold it up to the barrier to go out, though it has range of approximately 2 nanometers - its essential to keep track of your laps and know when you have used the last one, otherwise you'll arrive at the barriers and have no laps left ... you won't popular as you hold up the queue to leap out and run into the office to buy another lap ...

On a first trip I'd guess about 4-6 max in a day.
I didn't realise it'd be that few. Also, how regularly do people get let loose? One every 20/30 seconds?
Thanks for all the answers here, it's good to know what to expect before turning up. Much appreciated.

I am out there from 21st-24th in a Westfield 'Busa. Not staying at Ringhaus though, I am in Adneau. I commented on how nice that MNR looked in the kit car section. A Caterham, Westy and MNR, sounds like a good trip
sounds good to me, see you there
I am starting to get the feeling its going to be busy!

There is a LM race series on the GP all weekend too, so I may end up watching some of that if it is rather busy. I plan a fairly relaxed trip anyway...when I say plan I know that will change lol.

A friend is driving his MK R1 out there next month though, not through choice as such though, its just towing works out expensive if you don't have your own trailer. I'll be arriving at the Ring Friday afternoon as I should be in Dunkirque around 9am.See you out there.

We just want to tick the box of driving the MNR and riding the bike there (I am all up for towing in the future).
