My gf wants to learn to drift, probably needs to learn to do doughnuts first then move on.

Can somebody recommend a trak day where she can get the instruction and track space to learn ?

She's seen the Santa Pod drift days, would that be suitable ?

Also, she has an MX5 so does that mean she needs a helmet ?

Westfield run them. Going on one myself in Oct so can't comment on it yet, but seems reasonable value at 200 quid for a whole day. Numbers are limited to 20 so should get plenty of time behind the wheel.

The best place is Oulton Park on the rally stages. They are a low grip surface so your tyres don't get wrecked and is an easy surface to learn on. We run some club days there that you'd be welcome to join in on, next one is on Sept 26th. Free instruction is included and she would probably get around 100 runs at the courses over the day so lots of tracktime cool.

The stages look like this -

It's a lot of fun as well and passengers or extra drivers can also sign in if you want to come along. More info HERE

Note to mods - hope it's ok to post this event in answer to the OPs question? angel

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question. The website just says that its great for rear wheel or 4-wheel drive cars and that its easy on your tyres... are the cars provided or would I need to attend in my own rear or 4-wheel drive car?

Sounds awsome though and am currently hassling some mates to come with me!

You take your own car....

The Mitsubishi Lancer Register were there a few weeks back, have a look on their website for pics and vids....

There was an Astra (FWD) there, which went round quicker than a couple of Evo's....

I can vouch for the Oulton park rally tracks, great for drifting. Very little wear on the car and tires, although I did take the fog light off whilst exiting the track backwards!

That is because it is a drifting circuit, not a racetrack where speed is important.

Another vote for the Oulton Park drift days though. You can see the dates available on the MSV site. Never done one but I have watched twice whilst doing a trackday and they look brilliant.

If she wants to just have a play on a low grip surface at very low speed and not wreck her tyres I (and my SWMBO!) can recommend the Rockingham wet grip facility.

The MLR were there because they run the on the course as part of their sprint series so on this occasion it will have been timed and they will have been aiming at fast lines rather than big drifts biggrin. Fastest cars round that course are generally the Westfields and other se7ens, I always take mine along and the light weight allows much quicker acceleration on the slippy surface - makes it a bit interesting when you approach the next corner though yikes.

Worth noting that the MSV site only includes their own dates - not the ones run by us, same as they only list their own trackdays.

yeah it was good fun to watch....

there's a fine line between understeer and oversteer.... and when you want neither, it must have been quite fustrating!!

Probably more fun when you are just doing it to play and get the tail out smokin

Very rarely a problem TBH, people used to spin off and dig up the grass but now we've got the lightweight barries up they tend to let it spin on the tarmac and then carry on without making a mess!

We usually get a few of the 350z owners along -

Does your gf want proper drift/car control training or just a low-sped, wet-surface experience?

If the former, I do that.

Does she want to use her own MX5?

She would need a helmet, yes.
