Title says it all - dont want to spend much more than £2k to get to grips with track days without fear of financial ruin from knocks. Must be RWD, must be fun and must be cheap(ish) to maintain. Was thinking MX5, 200SX, 3 series. Other suggestions / thoughts on the above.

laugh Depends on your definition of cheap!

I'd go for an E30 325i.

There is no such thing as a cheap track car but if it must be RWD then I have to go with the E30.

Look here for details of my bargain 325i build to full track spec.

Annoyingly I have exceeded my Photobucket bandwidth so pictures are messed up but this car will be for sale soon (once I have fixed the rockers).

PM me if interested.

I bought a Mk2 Honda CRX a while ago for track duties. Good fun to drive on track, quick and very reliable. You can do an open pit day playing at 8500rpm all day without waiting for something to go bang.

About £200 spent on pads and fluid meant the brakes lasted without any fade, too.

I had a MK2 Astra GTE 16V. Chucked some high lift cams in it, a chip, lowered springs and schocks, threw the interior in the bin and had some of the best fun on ttrack, ever!! I bought the car for £400 and spent another, roughly, £650 on bits, it was a wee fliying machine! I used to show up quite a lot of cars that you would never have imagined!! At that money, you can afford to drive it like you stole it!! Being safe and considerate of course! You don't seem to worry too much about spinning off so drive faster!!

I don't think you want a 200SX on the cheap.
But I think you want an MX5 or MR2 mk1 smile

He's a bit hopeful with the BHP, i barely see 185 with a big cam and proper mapping. Still, get the engine back on standard ECU or standalone and that'll be a great car. Doesn't look much but has a very good spec.
