I have just been a passenger in a BMW 328 (N) around goodwood at a blistering speed, Passing everything incl. caterham's exige's and 911's on the track except one guy in an astra that he said owed him £50000.

Does anyone know of any other track day cars that don't need modifying heavily and will still be a great track car?

I own an Elise and have never tracked it for fear of crashing it, now i am thinking of a simular BMW 328 to use as a track day car, the guy who took me around goodwood paid around £500 for it and has used it on 6 trackdays.

Personally I have never worried about crashing on a trackday. I think you are more likley to have your car damaged on the road than anywhere else.

Remember on track you are in control of your own fate...worried about spinning off of blwoing your engine? Dont use full revs all the time and wind your pace back 20%. You will still be going quicker than on the road.

You forgot to mention the other car that you could not quite catch - until my tyres went off that is wink
And guess what!, It was ANOTHER BMW, this time a 325i (J) bought from ebay for £420.00 and on its 6th T/D too!
I had a really enjoyable dice with the 328i mentioned above but he just had the edge on me on the day.
This experience has given me a bit of a kick start and I am now going to try and pull out all the stops and get my primary track car ( an M3 bought for a few K, so still on a budget, just a slightly larger one ) ready to do battle once again.
Funny, but using a slower car seems to have sharpened my driving to some degree, I just hope that I can carry what I have learned with me back to the M3.

The next T/D @ GW is on the 10.10.09 that I know of, do you think it possible that the 328i will be there again?

A lot of it is down to driver and tyres/brakes.

I've got a 328 track car and have been past a 911, but as you have suggested my car is worth £2k, his was worth ten times that...

I got mine after seeing some go round Castle Coomb, it was deeply impressive. All I've done to mine was renew all brakes/brake lines/fluid (and fitted performance friction pads) and decent tyres.

Caterfields can go very quickly (even quite modest ones) but I have also noticed that most of them tend to go slowly. I guess they are quite hard to drive?

oh, and to answer your question Boxsters are awesome on track.

Can't believe you have an Elise, yet are thinking of buying a BMW to go on track..........

Just get your own car out there - it's what they're for - you won't do it any harm, and not everyone crashes on track days you know. Just be careful which TDO you go with. Join Lotus on Track and go out with them - safe, well organised days exclusively for Lotus owners, so everyone will be in their P&J.

If you want to feel how quickly you can go round Goodwood in a Lotus, come along on Monday 5th October and as long as it's dry I'll take you out in my 2-11. If wet I'll be in my Elise so you won't lose out.

One point for a 3 series - it is a more forgiving car on the limit than the Elise.

As above, use the elise!!

If its the astra I'm thinking of (silver VXR), its very quick. Not sure it'd owe him 50k... thats a lot of money... but it is tastey.

Im hoping to get the RS on track soon, To try and keep up with the astra.

There were a fair few Loti on track last Friday but only one came past me whistle

When I arrived first thing the fella with the VXR ( a Danish chap by the name of Bo ) was already there and we had a wee chin wag. From what he said and what I saw I would not dispute any of his claims. He was mighty capable and his car was very quick and well sorted yes

The silver VXR is mine. I have probably spent around £10K upgrading it, and you can pick them up for £10-12K, so no were near £50K.

Nice to meet you. It looked like you had fun with the slicks in the rain. Did you go again Saturday?

The last time I had an accident on the public highway it cost my insurance company approx £4k (7 years ago) just to replace the front clam and a few other accessories, I would rather spend £1000 on a banger and progress my driving skills, driving on the limit is very different to giving it 80% as someone else has quoted.

And as to meeting you at goodwood I would love to join you

BMW E36 328i FTW!

I was at Donington on Friday and, you can see, the car is on Caterfield/968 pace

Nice driving. I had a bit of a 'mare when I went to Donnington; tyre and brake issues. I'm hoping to go back next year.

What tyres are you using?

We generally use 888s but on the day the car was wearing bald 888s on the front and Hankook RS2s with 2.5 mm tread on the rear. In the wet the RS2s provided no grip whatsoever whereas the bald 888s were fine. Here is a video showing how loose the rear was – some hilarious moments
