The place - Brands Hatch Indy circuit
The car - 1992 e36 325i saloon with uprated front anti roll bar, strut brace, ebay £199 coil overs, EBC M3 evo front discs with yellow stuff pads, standard discs on rear with red stuff pads, LSD, slicks; everything else is as it left the factory yes
The driver - 115kg, has a fair bit of experience and would like to be ALOT better than he is biggrin

What is a realistic lap time to hope for do you think?

Completely depends on the drivers ability and set up.

Assuming decent ish driver, dry and well set up car. Between 54-1 mins/ lap.

Ebay coilovers? Are they proper dampered or shocking ones which are springs with sleeves?

If they are the later- god help you.

Hello Gav thumbup, how are you?, good I hope.
I actually did a day at BH in the car described above yesterday; My best time? = I was in the 58's ( not sure exactly due to the absence of lap timers etc. wink )
Fido, my nick name for the old 'track dog' biggrin, was bought from ebay for £420 and I have done 7 track days in it so far!
I have just put a deposit down on a CSL and next season it will be time to get serious about this stuff yes

Standard BMW design layout with 2.25" springs on front on threaded shock body and separate shock and spring with height adjuster on the top of the spring. I only have the rears fitted at the moment because when the kit arrived it turned out that the standard top mounts would not fit. On a whim I ordered some £65 camber adjustable roller bearing top mounts with a view to modifying them but low and behold when they arrived they fitted perfectly!,job done yes

Just for comparison, the lap record for a Production BMW E30 is 58.8. They are standard (320 or 318) engines and run R888s.

They're some bloody good times!
I haven't done any better in my old datsun shed than 58secs and it's got over 300hp! I use part worn road tires and soft susp with full trim and about 1500kg. Diff is virtually welded (Brands staff love that!) But it's great fun.
How much slower would you guys go with normal tires? - just wondering if i'd be that much quicker with slicks - second hand one on ebay can be had for £25smile

^^^ Slicks should be good for 2-3 seconds a lap yes, they are well worth it, I will NEVER go back to road tyres and only use 888's to drive to track and use in the wet if I have to ( I used slicks in the rain at Goodwood and they were only really a problem through standing water surprisingly! )

Weird question. Massively slower than lots of other stuff. Faster than some, old BMW's don't tend to be that fast generally.

It wasn't a question.

I presume he's saying why talk about lap times for track days? I suppose he has a point...

^^^ Because it helps to gauge the car/drivers performance. We all know that the more track days you do, the more serious your attitude and approach is likely to become.
You are of course correct, it is not a race and therefore times are fairly irrelevant but how else are you able to gauge improvement in you or the cars ability?

By the way, thanks for posting up those times for the e30 as there were a couple out on track the same time as me and what you said seemed about right upon reflection , it was helpful thumbup
