If anyone's interested, Croft are running an 'experimental' track day - it seems they're testing the noise limits with some new sound equipment they've got.

They reckon there'll be a maximum of fifteen road-silenced cars on track at a time.

Will it be a day full of Fiestas and a Honda Jazz?

Indeed. There's not that many fun cars I know of which would come in under 88dbA static.

yes

Seems a bit pricey too at £100 + £25 for an additional driver, for what is essentially an 'experiment' with only 1.5 hours guaranteed track time.

"when the injunction was served on the circuit earlier in the year, it meant that we had to stop running our car track days, as we needed to get the noise level for these days into a “Quiet” category. Without up to date noise monitoring equipment this was not possible to do."

^ Which is weird because I attended a track day at Croft last month, limited to 105db.

My Cooper S when it was standard had a static of 87 dB @ 4k rpm. Wouldn't think there's that many fun cars that would be under.

They are still allowed so many "noisy" days per year, about fortysomething I think, presumably yours was one of those.

That doesnt seem good value - if you are doing them a favour by being there it should be £50 or something

Aye they are only allowed so many "noisy" days because of the wicked witch of the west (the ex wife)

They can have as many "quiet" days as they like, which is the whole point in the experimental day, to see if they can keep the noise down that much so they can host normal days.

£100 is a little bit pricey... but saying that, it was 125 for RSOC Regional day, where i got 6 sessions of 15 min

Clio Cup is fine. About 81db static I think when tested mine at Croft a few years ago. So that's MX5, Clio Cup and M3CSL so far - doesn't sound too bad actually.

FWIW I now drive an elise which tests at 99db static. The extra noise from the exhaust does nothing apart from add maybe 1bhp, rule me out from quite a few track days and force me to wear ear plugs on any long journey. I really can't see why people get so precious about having some kind of right to have a noisy car. Who gives a st? It's just a PITA.

Anyway, that debate's been done before and I'll probably just get flamed by a load of TVR and Viper owners now so I'll shut up.

My E30 came in at 88dB when tested at Combe at 4500rpm and thats was with a near straight through exhaust.

I'll report back tomorrow what it does with it's new even quieter stainless system.

For reference, an E36 M3 Evo with stock exhaust including catalysts is 82dB at 5000rpm. My Elise with sports backbox and cat was 89dB, and without cat is 96dB.

scratchchin Should we have a Wiki where people can post up their car, exhaust and db levels measured on trackdays?

i think there is something like this already on the bookatrack website if you lok at the circuit details pages...

the problem is there are so many variables from the quality of the testing equipment, the location of the test, the wind, other noises in the vicinity, exhaust system, intake system, the competence of the tester etc etc that its never going to be conclusive...

Even gets quieter when the engine warms up.
