Who can help me out here..

We see lots of 'my car did the ring in'... xyx times.. then we read the times for the GT2's, TT's, GTR's.. some CSL's being quicker than a GTR... etc,etc..

My guess is that everybody is not using the same the same start and finish point.., or stopping their watches 10 secs before they go past where they started..!

So where are the generally accepted start and finish points..? wink for reference times..?

Bridge to gantry on TF days is fairly self explanatory as you can't run the full length of the Dottinger Hohe straight.

Most 'full' laps (and the measure that most manufacturers and Sport Auto uses) in fact exclude a 150m section of the track by the industry pool entrance. This is for two key reasons. The first is that there is an unoffiial speed limit on industry pool days on this section, to prevent cars exiting the pit being hammered by another vehicle that's right on the raggedy edge. The other reason is so that when the track is configured to also include the GP circuit, manufacturers and racing teams can still achieve broadly comparable data.

20.832km is the acknowledged distance for this 'full' lap.

As above,good answer!
Just to add the bridge you time from on tourist days is the bilstein advertised one you see as soon as you enter the track & not the gantrys or start lines at t13 & the gantry your time finishes at is the Audi sponsered one on the final dottinger hohe straight.
When you watch the official lap records it is a bit confusing when the cars don't finish where they start!

Great answer shape shifter. I knew where the start and finish lines where, but I didn't know why they missed out that section of the track until I read your post. Thanks.

If you run race chrono- free & available on net for most phones- just need a cheapy gps reciever for it, & can view full traces on yr pc later, then the btg split is built in if you choose btg option for ring & then no fudging with stopwatches or vids that can be doctored...

Is a great set up, is bettered by perfomance box tho thats rather more pricy.

I use a standard issue stopwatch taped to the dashboard. At the end of the day my times aren't that impressive so I'm not worried about whether anyone believes them or not. I'm timing myself to see if I've got better at it.

And half the time your best run will be ruined half way through because of coming up behind a Honda Gold Wing in one of the twisting bits or (more likely) a tatty 3 series on it's roof.

whatever you do, if you crash throw the stopwatch in the nearest bush as the local plid would crucify you. Theres plenty of warnings on timing.

Is there a law in Germany precluding you from using the gadgets?

same laws as the uk, preventing 'racing on the roads' etc. timing devices would be evidence for the prosecution

the ring is still a road and still subject to the STVO rules of the road

All camera mounted photography is prohibited on TF (but not track days and other closed road events).

Also although it is subject to normal traffic law it is also *owned* by Nurburgring GmbH and they can apply whatever rules they like as a condition of participation.

Ive also used Racechrono, very good piece of kit!!

I have an N86 & use bluetooth GPS to make sure i dont lose signal from the internal GPS.

After doing only 36 laps in 5 trips i did manage a B to G time of 9m 11s in my Ep3 Civic type r.

Id recommend the place to anyone who is a petrolhead smile
