Some friends had signed up to the Mallory Park trackday yesterday and as it's only up the road from me I popped over for a nosey. It turns our the first session is free, then £20 per session thereafter with no requirement to buy another session one you've had your free one, you could go home if you wanted to.

I actually thought it was a great idea for people new to the scene, it could possibly make Track Days alot more accessible to people who just want a few hours tracking at a time to suit them.

As I said, I wasn't driving yesterday, nor do I have any connection to FE, but I do think it's a great idea.

MSV do their 'taster' sessions @ £25 for 20 mins which i think is also a good idea, but the idea of a freebie to newcomers is a great idea - not sure of the ease of making it work , but i wonder if there's also value in making sure that newbies have some tuition - maybe as part of the cost of their day (freebie?).

I'd be concerned about being on track with any oik who just turned up to give there car a freebie 'rag' - same applies to pay per session.

I can understand the concerns of the free sessions attracting unwanteds, I'd not thought of that as their didn't appear to be any yesterday, but what about 'pay as you go' sessions?

I wouldn't want to be the TDO who, having splurged 15 grand to hire a circuit for the day, sat there wondering if enough PAYG punters were going to turn up to at least break even, how they were going to organise briefings for people turning up at odd times during the day etc. etc.

Agggh, no thanks I'd not want anything to do with that kind of trackday, has 'Castle Combe action day' type fookwits on track written all over it.

It sounds like you found the event well suited to your level?

All of them! (depending on the circuit, and obviously a TDO can get cheaper dates for winter / weekday than for summer / weekend).

But my point is - circuit hire is not cheap and running a day as a PAYG would be a big risk not to mention a logistical headache.

Same concerns here.

I heard that (up until they started digging the track properly) it was £32,000 to hire Donington for the day in the Summer...

Running trackdays isn't cheap that's for sure, I guess Focused reckon they will get enough newbies in that it will pay and get more people to their their other events but I wouldn't want to get too involved with that kind of day for some of the reasons stated above.

Aside from anything else, if someone isn't willing to stump up £100-150 for a proper all day event then how much effort will they have put into making sure their car is fit for the task? scratchchin

Used to work for a company that ran a one make race series. As part and parcel of the work was testing the cars at most UK circuits, with potential punters for the next (first) season. IIRC we never paid more than about £2k for any MSV circuit for a week day, exclusive access and obviously no services.

If Donny is/was £32k then how is a 60-car trackday ever going to come close to covering it's costs?

So all the TDO's are losing money hand over fist at Donny after shelling out 32K to hire it, and making an absolute packet at MSV circuits having paid only 2K?

Is it April 1st already? rolleyes

Indeedly, a mate hired Cadwell on a February weekday for £4000 earlier this year. Surely Donnington couldn't have been £32,000 for a summer weekend hire.

£2k per day? Unless you worked for them in 1973 pleaae will you come and work for me. i need your circuit hire negotiating skills. Last time I enquired re Donington it came in at £19k including VAT.

So how on earth do TDO's make money at Donny then?

Was defo no more than £2k, iirc Cadwell was like £1500. But then one of the chaps who ran the venture was the ex-racing school owner at Cadwell.

Was at the Ring the other weekend, and on the Sunday the GP circuit was open for "tourist" laps. Just pay 30 euros for 20 mins, and off you go! No briefing, no helmet, just rock up and have a blatt!

Can you imagine Brands Hatch or similar doing the same, where all the Saxo boys just turn up on a Sunday afternoon and have a race around, with no helmets or briefing.. Would be total carnage! lol
