Hi,

Following on my "Readers Car", thread here :
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

Can you tell me how you measure db noise levels?

Basically I want to ensure my car won't get turned away at a track day. So may as well try all I can at home and carry out the necessary changes (and measure them too!)

Thanks

Don

Usually TDO's don't measure the volume of your exhaust - the circuit marshals do.

They have a noise meter they hold 1 metre (ish) away from the back of your exhaust and ask you to hold the revs of your engine at a steady two thirds of the rev limit.

Circuits often have noise meters around the track so if you have a switchable sports exhaust don't think of setting it to "loud" after testing.

The easiest way of finding out if you will be OK is to call up your local circuit and asking them if they wouldn't mind testing your car at their next track day. Then you can book on at that circuit with confidence.

Oh.

Unless you have fitted a "loud" sports exhaust most road cars (even supercars) would appear to be fine. Except TVRs obviously. Or if you go to Thruxton.

It has a custom fabricated exhaust...I don't think it had a loud or quiet mode.

It is just shockingly loud. It makes children cry.

I am closest to Abingdon (airfield), Silverstone and Brands Hatch. Anyone organise there? If so PM me...I am off to find organisers websites and ask them direct.

Silverstone don't normally test, Brands Hatch just turn up whenever there's a track day on (MSV - http://www.clubmsv.com/car-home/calendar.aspx?venI...), don't know about Abingdon.

Then unless you go to a "Noisy" day you have absolutely no chance...and even noisy days have limits!

Just quickly... we've had a lot of Gallardos turned away from Silverstone this year on 105dB days.

Be careful - it's not just a sports exhaust thing. Induction kits can contribute to you breaking a noise limit.

Also had one turned away at Oulton. The driver disappeared off site but came back after a couple of hours and sailed through so don't know what was done. Slightly embarassing as I'd let his instruction slots go. Ooops! eek

Erm...I wasn't referring to a Gallardo. I meant my single seater!

Thanks everyone else, interesting to note someone mentioned Silverstone don't test. Will try at the track itself...

You'll probably struggle to get a single seater on a track day. A test day would be more appropriate.

Any circuit will do that for you FOC - Just pop down to your nearest one and ask.

IIRC either bookatrack or one of the TDOs will send you their noise meter in exchange for a deposit.

Remember to test the car when everything is hot and with the clutch dipped. An engine under load will produce a lot more noise (exhaust & induction) than any static test....

scratchchin Right then, down the high street at 100mph with a mate stood on the side of the road with the noise meter hehe

God, you've made me go and read a boy's car thread. I commend you!

Go to your nearest track and get it tested Then you'll know for sure.

Never mind the noise issue - if it's a single seater you will be hard pushed to get it on a trackday at all.
