My pal is constantly ragging me as I don't want to track it.

Is he a horrible man?

What damage (crashing aside) could I do to my car? I don't want to ruin what is a beautiful example of a great car.

What?

If you don't want to take it on track then don't. If it's your only means of transport then I would advise against it anyway.

What Callan said.

Tell him to buy one and track it if he wants to see an FTO on a trackday.

It's your car to do what you want with.

A lot of heat builds up in any car on the track, which could cause damage if the cooling system is in any way not up to scratch.

If you are sensible, then there is no reason to think a track day will cause any damage what so ever, however "accelerated wear" to the tyres and brakes is almost guarenteed. Turn up with 2mm thread, and a pads with less meat than a vegetarian BBQ, and you will be limping home by the the lunch break with the canvas showing, and metal rubbing metal.

Its not compulsory to drive on the ragged edge on track. If you wind things back a few tenths and drive smoothly I would wager your not going to add much more wear to your car than you would thrashing it on the street.

A bloke at my work has just built a mini with a Suzuki Swift GTI engine in it and won't take it on track "Cos I dont want to thrash it" but he drives everywhere on the road with his foot welded to the floor.

You could write your car off and not have insurance, or on the other hand you could be sensible, love it, catch the best bug of your life and overtake your mate if he is a useless driver...and shut him up.

But don't get pressured into it by him...although I highly recommend that you do a trackday if it is something that you think you will enjoy.

Consumables are mainly tyres and brake pads. So long as you set your tyres at the correct pressure (for track, so a little less than road) they will not do too badly, but standard brake pads will probably dissapear fairly fast but not in anything silly like 1 trackday.
