My 'in laws want to book me a track day as a chrizzy present, but I want to do something a bit different to the normal open pit days.

I've done plenty of standard 'instruction' days, as well as taking part in many open pit days at the likes of Knockhill, Croft, Cadwell etc in my own track car (mk2 Golf GTI) as well as others. I've also done rally days, and the old 'drive 5 supercars in one day' type things.

Anyway, I'm looking to do something a bit different. I've never done single seaters or Caterhams (which look like really good fun) and I've never done any skid pan training or handling days.

The budget is around £2-300, and I'd prefer it to be in the North (although don't mind travelling for something worth while). I'd ideally like as much time on-track as possible (obviously), but I know that budget isn't going to get me loads.

Anyone got any recommendations? I've heard good things about Palmer sport, but I like the idea of sliding about on a skid pan all day in my car and learning more about car control.

Thanks in advance.

Oulton Park regularly do drift days through MSV, might be worth a look.

I did the DDP day at Prodrive in Warwick & can highly recommend it.

1 x normal track
1 x adverse handling
2 x skid pans (circular & straight)

Carolyn who runs it was happy for me to choose where i wanted to spend the day, so you could skid all day if you wanted.

£300-350 if i remember rightly.

I reckon the DDP suggestion is a good one, no personal experience but I've only heard good things about them.

An alternative might be a Don Palmer day - I did his Limit Handling course a few years back and it was excellent but perhaps a bit over budget.

DPP day is good. Not as much fun as a track day but educational. I found the low friction stuff to be most useful.

We run our club driftdays there as well ( Trackaction-Online) , next one on March 13th but it is dependent on you having a rwd (or 4wd) car to use.

If you want to have a go on those stages in someone else's car then MSV run their rally school or Driftone have a variety of toys that you can go out in.

Same as with trackdays, you get much more track-time on the events where you bring your own car but either way it's a good venue, a fun and interesting change from main-circuit stuff.

Has anyone done this course - http://driftone.co.uk/fasttrackcourse.html "Intensive Drift Course", thinking about something like this or perhaps the Don Palmer limit handling course.

Any feedback from folks who have done either would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

I've driven most of their cars and they all go well round there.

28 laps is a pretty decent amount for an experience day, you might get three or four times that on a day where you bring your own car but as a turn up and drive solution it's a lot of wheel time.
