I'd fit an oil temperature gauge first to see if you even need one. Cold oil is as bad as hot oil.

Seconded. Also, if track use, have you fitted a baffled/dry/accu sump? I'd be more worried about surge than temperature.

no - how much of a worry is surge? could it kill the engine in one go?!?! whats the cheapest way to avoid it? could you not fit something similar to a fuel swirl pot but for oil?

im definately up for fitting an oil gauge - is it fairly simple? i presume just some sensor to fit in a piece of pipe which is joined into the main pipework???

any other guages while we're at it?

come to think of it - the gti-6 already has an oil temp gauge! as standard.

Surge happens on track if you generate high g-forces in corners - especially common if you put semi-slick or slick tyres on. Basically the oil is forced away from the oil pickup and so the engine effectively "runs dry" - this can easily destroy an engine in a few seconds.

If you're handy with a welder you could baffle the sump - or fit a kit - helps to reduce the problem, but wouldn't run slicks with it.

Dry sump is best - but most expensive....after a couple of mistakes I now have a dry sumped track car.

Accusump is a good inbetween if you can't afford a full dry sump - it basically is a pressurised oil container which watches your oil pressure and if it detects a drop squirts in extra oil to compensate - widely used in the states and gets good reviews over there....fairly simple to install if you're not completely inept with a spanner.

So, if you have an oil temperature gauge, does the oil ever get too hot? if it doesn't you really don't need an oil cooler.

Not a lot on a standard car with standard tyres. If you start modding the suspension, and running trackday tyres or slick tyres, then the increased lateral G could cause problems.

TORQUE - at this time of year you will probably be ok - in the summer, you will definately need one. I think a 13 is recommended, I used an 8 as I had one kicking around that never got fitted to a caterham. The 8 just about did the job on a heavy hot day but I would have felt more comfortable using a 13 as recommended.

If you go for the thermostatic (or whatever it's called) sandwich plate?? then you don't need to worry about cold oil as the cooler is only allowed into the loop when the oil temps get hot anyway.

I would imagine if you are running sticky tyres then some kind of dry / accusump would be useful. On road tyres I never had an issue and havn't heard of any. I would be happy using 888's too with a standard sump but never did so.

Have fun.

A stiffer rear arb is a fun addition too - check out the 306gti6 forum if you havn;t already. Loads of people on there track their pugs.

if you get really serious too then I would recommend looking into higher capacity radiators. My water temps got scary a few times in really hot weather!

16 row will be needed really, these engine don't tend to suffer from surge issues.

Standard sump has a baffle on the Gti-6 I've never heard of one dying like the Mi16s used to in the 5 and a bit years ive owned one.

13 row cooler will do the job nicely with a thermostatic sandwich plate.
