Will be taking the Cerb to Bedford for a track day this month and am wondering what to do about insurance. Car is insured with Direct Line, and I have heard rumours that if you tell them you are taking it on the track, they will cancel the insurance completely!!

Does anyone have any suggestions for temporary cover?

At Bedford you;re going to have to try pretty hard to have an accident.

Use google to search PH for 100s of these threads.

Can't see why Direct Line would cancel your insurance altogether, not covering you on track is one thing but saying that as you track a car they won't cover you on the road either seems crazy.

Competition car insurance usually get a mention (as above) but individual insurance for track usually comes out pretty pricey. I'm with Mannings who include it in my road policy and would recommend them, if you intend to do a bit more then may be worth switching.

DL and someone else a few years ago wouldn't cover me on road because I did track days. They found out by asking why I had changed the suspension and stupidly I said to take it on track days. They then informed me they would be unable to cover me. The way it was presented seemed to say if I'd done it for looks that'd be fine. But mods to use the car on track, they are not interested in my business. The answer like yourself was to find a more specialist broker.

Some people have had the idea of towing their cars 5 miles down the road after crashing on a track day, and making an insurance claim on the basis that it was an ordinary road accident. I can see why insurance companies wouldn't be interested in that sort of risk

When I was looking for insurance the AA refused to quote as I asked about trackdays.

Try someone like HIC as track cover is included (or used to be included) in their premiums.

Yes but those people wouldn't be the ones ringing to see if they can pay more to add track cover in the first place. So they are ousting the trackday demographic that want to be honest/responsible, and more than likely keeping those that aren't. I am also curious as to whether it is limited to the car that will be tracked or the driver and his mentality (are they really saying, you like trackdays so you like driving fast, you may do so on the road regardless of car, so we don't want you as a customer anymore). I track my TVR but might not track my daily smoker, am I excluded from even insuring that on the grounds that I "do" trackdays, or just from insuring the car that I would take to a trackday.

Clearly it's their decision as to who and what they want to insure, just seems a tad blinkered to me.

When I called Competition Car Insurance, for ad-hoc insurance (per event), they work on a 10%/1% basis.

The excess is 10% of the car's value, and the daily premium is 1% of the car's value.

So a £50k car would cost £500 to insure for the day, and you would have to pay the first £5,000 of any damage.

I'm not sure what the variations are, but those figures are fairly typical according to the girl I spoke to.

If you're a TVRCC member, it might be worth getting a quote from A Manning ( http://www.manninguk.com/automotive/index.php )- they include track day cover as part of the road policy - and moving insurers. However, there are some restrictions, and reportedly they've also put the premiums up quite steeply this year.
