Hi All,

I am heading out for my first Track day in my Focus ST or Focus RS (still undecided as to what car to take) at Brands on April 8th 2010, will anyone else be there?

As it is my first I have decided to go for a morning only session and have booked an instructor for one of my sessions. I am looking for any advice or pointers anyone can give me before I go.

I have supported a friend in his race series (sports 2000) for a few years so am well aware of equipment I should be taking but all advice is welcome.

Thanks from a very excited Newbie!!

Standard advice, really:

Start at a pace you're comfortable with, and build up from there.

You don't need to go hell-for-leather from the off.

Keep an eye on your mirrors and move over for things coming up quickly!

Otherwise just enjoy it, and give you and the car a rest after every 20 mins or so.

Is it an open pitlane and who is organising it? My mate wants to do one and it is pretty local.

all good stuff

brake in a straight line only
slow in, faster out of bends
get overtaken
keep your eye on the mirrors
drive smoothly
avoid the first and last 15 minutes
work out who to stay away from ( there will always be one on any trackday)

good move in getting instruction

enjoy, it is a great laugh

Make sure each component on your car has PLENTY of wear left - track driving can wear things out at least 10x that of road driving. Treat your car to an oil and brake fluid change if you haven't done so recently.

Drive as fast as YOU feel comfortable with.

Don't make assumptions about other peoples' cars - You could get overtaken by a MK1 escort, just as easily as you could overtake a 911 GT3... Use your mirrors, be fully aware of other cars around you and be courteous and you'll make friends!

Check you car before and after each session on track... temp, oil, water, barke pads, tyre wear (especially inside shoulders - jack car up to check each tyre properly), etc.

Oh, and above all... Have fun! thumbup
