So I need a car which can run me around, drive to the train station and do a few track days in.
Due to current projects I do not want to spend loads on it so needs to be fairly ready out of the box without spending another 10 on suspension, brakes, wheels, seats etc
Any ideas?
I was thinking Clio 182 but can anyone who has done similar give any feedback?
Thanks

go on be a little different. very good reputation, at least as reliable as a 182 and a LOT faster. i have heard mention that a load of lotus drivers were not happy one trackday that they could not keep up with a rover 100 only to find out it was one of these.
they will even do one with a pea shooter exhaust, as the cars exhaust is side exit!

haha bonkers, what roughly would the power to weight be on one for one of these?go on be a little different. very good reputation, at least as reliable as a 182 and a LOT faster. i have heard mention that a load of lotus drivers were not happy one trackday that they could not keep up with a rover 100 only to find out it was one of these.

e36 M3-
I ran one 3 yrs/10 trackdays, regular euro trips over alps etc etc, good coilovers & a decent set up, no horror stories in that time, mid 8s ring a/c in full trim, 160mph on the autobahns, almost when 30 mpg driven gently, fast fun blaster just sold @ 4.5k
Now running another, just bit more track spec & tad more $
Also got mx5 track prepped & supercharged, drift days, track days, road use fun fun fun, sub 4k.
Also a decent track prepped Golf, peanuts to run, great at 'ring, good grunt with little $ easily most fun per small $ spent, get a pair of gems for 4k!
Decent track spec e30 325s are ace too loved my old one, easily sub 4k.

thanks mate, seriously the metro could be a great idea! "I must check peoples fleet before i mock them"

Liking the 944 idea too but would I get a problem car for 4k?
FWD hatches are going to be the cheapest (and lightest, so cheaper on consumables). I've just bought A048's for my Civic track car - under £350 for a set. A DC2 Integra is a fantastic track car in standard road spec and would fit your budget.
E36 M3 is a great car and would be my choice for a £4k RWD track car - although I'd probably end up spending another £2k on suspension , seats, brakes, 2nd set of wheels/tyres..... It's also a heavy car.
As ever - it's much cheaper to buy a car that is already prepared for track work..

I'd also go for a DC2 over a clio.
Very similar power to weight & running costs but the integra benefits from the LSD, better driving position and in my experience better reliability despite being older and I'd also expect the integra will hold it's value better. Mine sold for £1k more than I paid for it 6 months earlier.

I haven't set foot in a gym for over a year so it's less than likely. I have owned mine for 2.5 years, has been uber reliable & has held it's value (although I have spent alot on it) very well.

The main thing to check on a DC2 is that there's no oil smoke on VTEC (get someone to follow you when you floor it). Lots of these cars have worn rings now & it's an expensive (~2k) re-build for a 4k car. Tom @ TGM reckons he gets a call about this once every few weeks.
Rust can be a problem - mainly the bonnet leading edge & the rear wings behind the wheel arch
Prices have been pretty steady for a few years - good ones are in demand.
As a daily driver it's not nearly as special to sit in as a 944. You will also get the usual FWD torque steer on bumpy roads. I had both for a while & kept the 944. The DC2 is very noisy on motorways & has poor ventilation - gets hot in the summer.
Having said all that, the DC2 is about as close to a race car as you'll get in a cheap production car IMHO.
