Hi folks, I'm signed up for my first track day on saturday at LLandow circuit (a small track local to me near Cardiff). Nervous - yes but excited too!

My standard insurance with RH doesn't cover track days (I've called them and they can't do an extension either).

Has anyone taken out a single day insurance for track days? How much did you pay and who with?

Cheers in advance.

competition car insurance. But expensive for one day. A lot of people don't bother, but I had insurance, and a week last Friday I hit the tyre wall at a trackday, I've done about 6k of damage, so glad I had insurance. Excess is £1400 though

http://www.moris.co.uk/ will do a single day fairly cheap but excess are always high for track days. Llandow is a small friendly circuit, it's not particularly fast but then there is also little run off. The most likely (only) real place to come off is the right handers onto the back and front straights.

I was wondering about track day insurance.

Reading on a track day company's website they talked about crashes being unlikely, but that insurance is recommended if you are worried that you might damage you car.

What about third party insurance, especially in terms of personal injury? What happens if one driver seriously injures or kills another?

Do people without insurance simply 'run the risk'?

Essentially yes. I've heard a general rule is the premium will be 1% of the cars value and the excess will be 10% of it's value. You'll have to do the maths yourself and work out the insurance costs to the value of your car and make a decision based on that. Personally I take the risk as my track car is cheap providing I don't bend the expensive bits I've added.

It also depends on the track too. Somewhere like Mallory Park gives very little room for moments, where Silverstone, Rockingham, Bedford etc have loads of run off so the risk is less. You can still have car to car contact but it's much less likely.

I'm thinking more about a driver injuring another driver though. Even setting aside how you might feel if you kill someone, the ensuing PI claim would financially ruin you for the rest of your life.

Isn't this sort of thing covered by the usual release forms?

i.e. "Motorsport is dangerous, you may be injured or killed, you agree to participate knowing these risks."

Clearly if someone is reckless to a criminal extent then they could be prosecuted for that, but otherwise it seems that participants have to understand the risks and the consequences of their actions.

I think the form you sign is only between you, the TDO and the circuit, so if you hurt yourself you can't take action against them. There is nothing to say you can't take action against another driver. I'm not sure quite how this would work as you have agreed to the risks, but someone causing injury by driving dangerously might get you somewhere.

On that note, I wonder if anyone has ever been sued for causing an accident in a race series that lead to serious injury or death?

If someone causes someone else a serious injury by doing something dangerously, doesn't matter if it's tiddly-winks, chain-saw juggling or driving on a trackday, they're likely to end up infront of a jury explaining their actions.

As for being sued for causing an accident, just ask Frank Williams.

I used these guys:
http://www.competition-car-insurance.co.uk/contact...
(Don't be too scared to phone, just call them up. Much easier than faffing about with online quotes. All quotes are bespoke, so an online price isn't really possible.)
Price depends on the car, the circuit and your experience.

I seem to recall the excess is 10% of the vehicles value and the premium on a £14k car was about £140 a couple of years ago. But your quote will be different.

The other one I've had reccomended to me is:
https://secure.moris.co.uk/trackday_quick_cover.as...
Who I've not used, as I now get track cover as an extension to my road policy.

I very much doubt if you have bought third party cover though. It'll almost certainly only cover your car, and then in only restricted circumstances.

Yes, trackday insurance rarely covers damage to third party cars of persons
