I am looking to having a play round the green hell but I know that mu insurance will not cover me - I obviously want to do it but I do not want to risk causing damage to myself or anyone else

are there any companies who will insure me for a day??

There is a product that Ken Harris at Nurburgmotorsport has agreed with Allianz which will cover the cost of track repair etc etc. Im not sure if this has been rubber stamped as yet so worthwhile asking him. However play safe drive within your limits and you wont require insurance, oh and move out the way for any car with a german plate lol

The above policy does not cover the crucial 3rd party liability that you need. I say need, because on TF or most Non-UK organised trackdays it is a legal requirement. Ergo you will require insurance to satisfy the nice men from the local Police even if you are never unfortunate enough to have to claim on it.

Seriously - unless you have cover that doesn't attempt to exclude the place then the best and most unambiguous way to ensure that you are covered is a track rental car from a local specialist (RSR Nurburg, Rent4Ring, RentRacecar, etc...). The excess is still significant though.
