May be a daft question but are tarmac rally tyres good for track day use (the moulded slick type)- I've been thinking about using A048 / R888 / V70A's (£700 a set) but part worn tarmac rally tyres appear to be availabel in 18" for between 40 & £50 a chuck.

Advice please

Thanks

Paul

some of the rally moulded pattern slicks are quite good and cheap compared with R888's however there are lots of different types from Dunlops to remoulds, so need to look into what is about and at what price.

I used to use Silverstone S585 tarmac tyres on a 1700kg M5 and the grip was fantastic. Did make a hell of a racket compared to road tyres though.

I wouldn't pay the £200 retail price for them though, and got 9 nearly new ones for £100 (was about 4 years ago though).

You will need a spare set of wheels though as they're rarely road legal.

Ive ran pirelli rx5/rx7/rx9 on track for over a year on my evo....great grip, but as said very noisy!!

Cheap as chips compared to r888!

Got quarter worn sets and seen 4-5 trackdays out of each set!...bargain.

That sounds promising

The car is a MK1 focus RS running about 300bhp. I was thinking of a hard compound front and a medium rear - does that sound about right?

Cheers

I ran hard allround last time out at oulton, even tho my evo eats tyres, they were fantastic.
