In the current, crazy world of people moving into a house next to a racing circuit and then bhing about the noise, and then ruining our (my) fun by enforcing noise restrictions somewhat under the what the car put out, is there anywhere left that doesn't ram a db meter up your exhaust before letting you loose?

I am SO fed up of being ready to click the button on a track day booking (Like the PH only Rockingham one I was fancying) only to be ruled out by the noise levels.

I was at Rockers the other week for the GT and F3 championships and they were WAY over 105db.

Tracks use their noisy days for racing. Hardly front page news.

If you want to do track days, you've got to spend some money making your car quiet. It's the way things are these days and it's not going to change. If we can get a Westfield down to 93db and a Juno down to 98, then you should have no trouble at all getting just about anything sensible on track. There is no reason at all for most things road going to be too noisy.

I drove Anglesey earlier in the year and didn't see a noise meter all day.

If that 21 is your track car then you only have yourself to blame if you're failing noise tests...

i have been trying to keep my track cars quiet for the last twelve years... i do have an appetite for n/a with throttle bodies & large bore straight through custom s/s pipes, purely for performance obviously!.. this was interupted a while back with a turbo spree which brought no problems.. my latest trackday weapon purchase, a mk1 GT3 has proved to be my biggest challenge to date.. the gt3 came to me wearing a full Oshini Racing Titanium system(headers, silencers, crossover pipes, cats & tips).... oh how the the noise regulating bod rolled on the floor with laughter when i rocked up at Oulton park a few weeks ago and blew 114db!! i just got the car back on Saturday from Pipewerx who replaced the single titanium silencer boxe(s) with twin per side s/s replacements without cats.. the result is 102db @ 5500 rpm .. the acid test comes this Friday at Silverstone!!!

keep it quiet!

Don't really see the fun in having your car make a big daft noise and getting booted off a track day, but whatever tweaks your swede I guess. Plenty of cars sound great but still get through noise testing, so there's no need to fail. If you really value your noise that much then just pay for a noisy day.

That may have been a `noisy day`. I was there the other month, midweek 95db day and they tested every car, turning away several for being too noisy.

Cos big daft noise makes me grin like a kid. But I use bolt on track silencers, noise on the road for fun, 86db static on track. Happy times.

Myself to blame? I built it that way. I want it that way. I like it that way. I asked if anyone knew of unrestricted days because I have no intention of changing it.

My track car (FWD 2.0 Turbo Fuego) is a bit quieter, within limits, but the 21 being 4wd and all is willing me to give it a good hooning on the track as well.

Most things - i.e. stboxes, they you are correct. High performance and you couldn't be more wrong.

Why? Are you suggesting high performance cars *need* to be loud and can't be silenced without increasing the back pressure to levels that are detrimental to the engine output? Can you give us some examples?

I disagree. Unless you're running a historic or a Formula car, there's pretty much no reason for them to be loud. Most high performance cars are loud for the same reason they're painted bright colours. That's not to say it's bad, but it's certainly not necessary.

new GT3 RS, Scuderia, Carrera GT,shelby GT500 - all well above 105db, to the point they are having problems being used on UK circuits - none built to be "loud by design" - all loud because the engine doesnt want to be strangled.

Also induction noise - look at a lot of motorbikes - race cans were originally designed to give more performance as standard silencers strangle bikes....

I have 2 cars which can get much quicker if I have no noise concerns - a haybusa engined kit-car which is strangled through indiction noise killing at the front end and cats/silencers at the back end, and a 996 turbo which could liberate 100bhp with better breathing and thus more noise...

Yes. Donnington sometimes still does 'unlimited' days sometimes.
