Going racing?

Hi all, not posted on here for a while but I'm thinking about going racing with a couple of mates and we need some tips/ advice? Can anyone help?

I read jims post at the start of the year about the trackday trophy and I've now seen this so might go along this weekend and check it out http://www.trackdaytrophy.co.uk/news/trakcday-trop... Has anyone else heard of it / competed in it? What do you think of a 106 race car?

Any help much apprecaited!

Me and a m8 have been contemplating doing just the same next year so we are going along to the last race at Brands tomorrow to meet a few of the guys and check out the machinery.

It looked a good initiative to help make the transition from track days to racing, but TBH I've never really understood where it is going after season one. Will experienced (after a season) people be asked to move on? If not, I'm not too sure what will make this series unique as it will have a mixed bunch of (relatively) experienced racers and newbies from season two onwards. Don't want to sound like I'm slagging it off, good to see somebody trying something a bit different to get people out there racing.

just seen this on their site which pretty much explains

"Teams must contain at least one novice driver who has competed in less than six races before. However, experienced racers are permitted to race with a novice co-driver. Solo entries are also acceptable from novices."

would i be right im thinking the power/weight ratio would use hp from the fly rather than wheel hp?

i look after a team of two cars/4 drivers (TWB Racing) inc an E30 M3 and Porsche 968, but 95% of entries are single cars much as they were for trackdays, mark 2 golfs, 325I bmw, 924, clio cups, mx5, . Friendly and very little contact but grids could be a litle bigger imho

we were testing today at Brands ready for tomorrows race so if you come along pop buy and see the drivers and me. all the TDT cars are lower outer paddock farthest from the track.

Practice at 10am, qualifying at 12 noon and race at 4.30pm

End of season party with 3 live bands at 8pm onwards

Looks like quite a good series they've got going there, tempting stuff! Seems like a good step for going from track days to racing.

That's the bit where I'm not really seeing the attraction. Why join a series that you will be turfed out of half way through your second season? (Unless you can manage to keep finding "novices" to join the team until they get their six signatures then they will need to move on). As you will be racing with a mix of new and experienced drivers anyway (same as any other race series) why not just prepare the car for a series that you will be able to race in for as long as you like?

thanks for that, will take a look! well this does look quite tempting, last time i weighed my car with me in it and a 1/4 of fuel it was 1280kg and im running about 254bhp at the wheels so im guessing this puts me just within Class A?

may enter this next year if they are still going to run it

Is it 200 hp at the wheels or at the flywheel? Normally bhp is at the flywheel, whp is at the wheels (takes into account drivetrain loss)

"The power and weight of the vehicle to be self-certified by the competitor with his /
her race entry in advance of the race.
The power of the vehicle must be measured at the wheels. Each competitor must self
certify the power of their vehicle by providing a rolling road print out on or before the
race event. The rolling road analysis must have been carried out less than 12 months
prior to any race.
The weight of the vehicle must be self certified by the competitor to be that of the car
including one driver. The vehicle must equal or exceed the weight specified at the
end of the race.
All vehicles must be under the maximum power to weight ratio of 200bhp / ton."

so basically you have to tell them how much the car weighs and what power its putting out, this seems a little open to abuse if its not checked on the day? but i guess its just supposed to be an introduction to racing so not too serious

Popped along earlier to see the qualifying for this, sadly couldn't stick around for the race. Looked like there'd been a few incidents, the track looked a bit greasy.

Had fun watching, but am now extremely tempted to give this a go next year!

It is very much a way into Motorsport from trackdays and I'd say 90%of the cars are just that, ex trackday cars kitted out for race.

Speaking to MSV yesterday I think if next year any of the guys who have raced from compete novice in the series and can enter next year, would be able to race to the end of the season. Also I'd guess that by 2012 there would be a 'graduatez' series to move onto.

Bascially it is not governed by rules and I don't think they are wanting to add rule after rule to make the regs too cumbursome. It is regulated on entry by mSV so if you are entering in the spirit of the series that is the most important thing.

It would be nice if they managed to do a 2 or 6 hour event next year as well!

me and a friend have been looking at this series as a way into motorsport. Will try and watch afew rounds next year and see whats going on and maybe try and get in at the end of 2011 or start of 2012!

im looking at getting my ARDs test done, does anyone know if you have to resit the test/having a medical each year or is it just a case of renewing your licence?

The wording is something like "strongly recommended" until you are 45, compulsory when you hit 45.

Hi all,

I just came across this post and thought I'd add my two penny's worth from a series organiser's perspective.

Our regulations aren’t finalised for 2011 yet but we do want the series to remain aimed at novice drivers and therefore the rule that states "driver must have completed less than six races before" will still apply for new teams entering the series. However, as it currently stands we will be to allowing Trackday Trophy competitors who have competed with us this year to do a full season in 2011.

We've (unsurprisingly) had a lot of interest since the Fifth Gear footage came out (http://www.trackdaytrophy.co.uk/news/fifth-gear.aspx) so we're aiming to have a graduate series in 2012 as shim has suggested.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!

I've been racing in the Track Day Trophy this year in my Ford Puma and can certainly recommend it!

I'm not a front runner (need a few more ponies under the bonnet for that) but have really enjoyed the battles i've had on track with the other guys out there. The racing has been very clean so far as well which is great!

It's been a great introduction to racing for me, not only learning about racecraft but also getting my hands dirty and learning how to prepare the car.

Were you at the final at brands hatch? i was working there that day... i saw your puma going round the track and at the end of the day on its trailer... did you spot my frp when you left?!
