Fire extinguisher fitting
Discussion
I like the idea of having a fire extinguisher to hand in my track car, but I don’t like the idea of it breaking loose and flying round the cabin.
Can anybody point me to some reasonably priced off the shelf car extinguisher mounts. Needs to either bolt to a roll bar behind my head or to the floor.

OMP make reasonably priced extinguisher mounts. Theyre intended for plumbed-in bottles, but have 2x quick release buckles. The problem will be finding a pair which suit the circumference of the extinguisher bottle that you have. Id look for over-sized brackets and cut and double rivet them to suit.
What extinguisher are you looking for? You need to be clear about what you intend the extinguisher to do (this applies to its medium, its size and its application). For example: foam and plumbed-in extinguishers are designed to save the driver, not the car. If you want to extinguish a car fire, saving the vehicle, then you need a powder extinguisher, preferably of at least 4 kilos. Something like this would be better mounted in the boot, using chubby (plumbed-in) bottle mounts. AFFF extinguishers mounted within your rech in the cabin are good for putting your legs out, but of far less use if your carbs are on fire.....

Thanks for the replies. I guess my main aim is to stop me burning to death if the worst happens. Would be nice if it is able to deal with small engine fires as well but if the car is seriously alight, I doubt there will be much value in beating the fire brigade to it.
Was originally thinking of a 2kg handheld unit. Will look at plumbed in units but the car is a track/fast road mx5 with the majority of the interior still in, so it may look a little out of place.

You just need something like this: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motorsport/Fire_Exti...
Make sure the extinguisher you buy is mounted in a metal bracket with the over centre latches like the one in the link.
You cant see it in the link but the bracket will have a flat, metal back on it with a couple of holes in it, you can just bolt through the floor of your car with washers on the other side or you can make up a fancy bracket that uses the front bolts on the seat rails or something.
A 2KG extinguisher will be fine for a minor fire but if you have a proper fire it will only really be good for smashing a window to get out or knocking the flames down long enough to get away.

I've not got one myself, but these have had good recommendations in the past http://www.elise-shop.com/sparco-fireater-fire-ext...
