I have had a look around the net for some type of cover to cover my plate while on track. Has anybody had any joy in sourcing an item like this?

Methinks you are trying to reinvent the wheel.

LOL, I did consider this as I wrote the post. Reminds me of NASA developing a pen to work in space, whereas the Russians used pencils.

I'm probably being dumb but since when have you needed to tape up your number plate on a track-day?

Your road insurance obviously isn't invalidated just because you've used your car on a track. However, if you make a claim on the same day as you're spotted on a track day you've got significantly more loops to jump through before they're going to pay out (assuming you don't have track day cover of course).

confused

I think you mean if you stack it on track, then drag the wreckage into a nearby ditch claiming you went off the road the insurance company will discover your attempt to defraud them biggrin

Beastly people who film your every midemeanour and then put you on YouTube.

This is why you always see a lot of buxom young ladies walking down the pit lane with gaffer tape over their eyes a la Reader's Wives.

It's also increasingly common for manufacturers to do a bit of research when they suspect a car has been used on track and then come in for warranty work on the engine/suspension/gearbox/etc.

If you cover the plate up then they can't prove it was you, nor can your boss see that you've been on a trackday when you were supposedly sick.

Don't forget about covering the VIN Plate at the bottom of the windscreen .............. there's you thinking he/she is taking a general admiring view of your pride and joy, when the shutter focus is actually up much more close and personal.

Let's be clear, not condoning fraudulent behaviour in any way, but it does grate on me when I read manufacturers who sell their cars on the basis of their performance trying to refute genuine warranty claims just because someone's had a bit of fun in it on a trackday i.e having the audacity to use it something like it is claimed it was apparently designed to do?

I once inadvertently voided my road policy over the phone by asking if they offered track cover. Wouldn't offer track cover and insisted my policy was void if I took the car uninsured on a trackday.

On track days, why not just take the plate OFF.

But criminals are lazy. So if they wanted a plate off a specific car, what do you think is easiest; standing at the side of the road waiting for the correct type of car to come past, or sitting in front of a laptop?

Not only that, the criminals may be in a location where some cars are not exactly common.
Believe it or not, I have never seen another M3 the same colour as mine whilst driving to work and back. (a 50 mile round trip)
If I wanted a clone a plate from a silver grey M3, a quick internet search would be by FAR the easiest way to do it.

Now I'm not saying this is a common occurrence, but to laugh at people who decide not to take that tiny chance is a bit silly.

Bit of a tangent... if your car gets cloned and the clone car gets snapped speeding through a camera (or parked illegally for example), where does the law stand on you proving it wasn't your car? I assume it's not good enough to just say "it wasn't me" - but what sort of evidence would they expect to see?
