Gents I've recently started a new job, im enjoying the working enviroment, the role, and my co-workers on a personal level.

However if I didnt know any better I'd say i've walked onto the set of east enders.

  • 4 people have left within 8 months (out of 30)
  • theres poor communication between departments
  • my department (software support) doesnt even have a manager.
  • On top of that, the MD who does actually 'manage' us has promised pay rises and promotions etc. which have never come, hence why people have been getting pissed off.
I'm trying to remain positive, but everyone around me has a miserable face and try to bury their heads in the sand. our MD has asked me to do a few trivial jobs (building desks, clearing out the storeroom) etc but this is stuff you do when your new to a job. Hes even asked if I wanted to work at the weekend (unpaid) to setup the replacement computers.

Now I personally dont mind this, and our MD is really nice (to me at least) but my closer colleagues are telling me not to bother as hes just using me?? But surely if I put the effort in, paid or not, (more so when I get better at my actual job), then it'll pay off in the long run? Maybe it won't, but its all experience.

It really is bloody mind games.

If you don't mind giving 110%, go for it.

I have a theory. We're still in a recession. Bosses know they can treat staff badly. We will be out of the recession eventually and the staff will remember those bosses who took major advantage especially if they do not reward their staff once the fruits of the end of the recession come... and those bosses will have major problems trying to fill positions that will start springing up all over the company.

Don't get dragged down by others. Hard to stay away from the office gossip, but lead by example and differentiate yourself from the rest.

It will get noticed in the long term, particularly if it works well with the MD. Tough, but worth the effort.

I despair at how organisations can be so poorly led. How do these people make it in to positions of leadership without the necessary competences or behaviours? Somebody must be appointing them!

OP,

In a company full of bhers and whiners, the posotive guys get the promotions. Do whatever you feel is right, and you'll either prosper, or change your mind. I've never met an unmotivated sucessful person, but I've met 100's of gumps that think that they've worked in place x for 5 years they deserve more.
Respect is earned, go on and get it.

PS - if your boss is a pisstakr, you'll work it our for yourself very quickly!
