I've made a life decision. Advice please!

Hi Guys, I’ve decided to write a thread in here, as I have made a bit of a life decision.
I am 20, a Uni student (Studying Business and Management), and I have decided to continue looking for a placement position indefinitely. (Employment on a temporary basis, for undergraduates, in my case two thirds the way into my degree).
Placements for my course are in no way compulsory and must be secured by the student themselves.
By this point in the year, a placement should of already been secured, but like I said, I have made the decision to continue the search, and not progressing into the final year of university; because of this I am most likely looking for more localised placements, within the northwest for medium sized companies. (Rather than multinational companies).
I haven’t exactly got a very specific role I would like to hold, so generally speaking I’m after a position in management, although I’ve looked into stock control,and operations.
Potentially this means I will be living at my parents house near Manchester, throughout the duration of any prospective placement although I am open to moving to suitable accommodation nearer the job if need be.
Currently I am looking at the automotive industry (because clearly being a regular poster on here, I am interested in the product and business of this industry).
Specifically looking at emailing the appropriate people at some of the northwest's dealer groups, over the weekend, including RRG, Lookers, Evans Halshaw et el.
So my questions to the PH masses would be:
Has anyone been in a similar position than myself, and what did you do? (Continued looking for a placement position indefinitely).
Is there any advice you could give me regarding writing speculative letters to organisations, such as the automotive industry ones above, or more generally, any industry?
And I’m sure there is much more advice and help that might come through this thread, so feel free to say anything that may help

An option to consider is in-house marketing and sales teams for the big manufacturers. They frequently do graduate and many do undergraduate schemes looking for new talent in these fields. For example: http://www.ford.co.uk/AboutFord/FordCareers/Career...
The other thing I'd (personally) recommend is not to waste the last couple of years and really consider closing down that last year of your course, even if it is after a year of experience (which is invaluable by the way)

I did a four year sandwich course in IT + business about 10 years ago. 3rd year in industry.
If I'm honest with you, I think you have left it a bit late to secure a good role for the next year as the companies that run structured programmes (rather than using you as cheap labour) will have filled their roles.
Many companies and charities are even pushing people to take on unpaid internships up to a year as they can exploit the richer students who can afford unpaid work.
What requirements do your degree course make for the 3rd year to recognise it as successfully completed? Full time work? Part time work? In a set industry? I'm assuming they will have some standards and context for the year out?
If I were in your shoes at the moment, I'd consider skipping the year, finding some summer work, going back to complete the final year and using the final year to focus on getting in on the various graduate schemes, the intakes of which will start their selection in September through to next June.

I understand the structured placement roles of many large companies will have been fulfilled by this time of the year.
And that companies that will take on a 'placement role' now,may well want "cheap labour", but I have no problem with that.
I am quite certain that for a placement to be recogniced on my degree title I need to hold a possition for 36/37weeks.
Although 6month placements are possible (and two 6month placements,the second one being found during the 1st one)have been done by previous students, for it to be reconised.
Also from what I have heard undergraduate roles can be created sometimes by amending a current vacancy.(?) Anyone know anymore in regards to this?
I have decided indefinatly to find a possition somewhere for sure now...
Although a don't have the option to accept volentry work unfortunately.
I am hoping , at least, there maybe more localised, smaller companies willing to take on a undergraduate for at least 6months. Then if needs be, hope to secure general full time employment, untill september 2012.
I am fully aware of the difficulty of my situation, and I am trying to be in no way diselusional.
P.s Any industry will suffice, to be classifed on my future degree title.
