Successfully worked at things you enjoy/self-employment?

Has anybody here successfully earned a living from pursuing a range of activities that they enjoy (and have thought of ways to offer them as a chargeable service) instead of enduring a 40 hour desk-bound week for the next 35 years as an employee?

Alternatively, has becoming a freelancer in your existing field changed your outlook?

It seems that 'creative'/artistic roles are most suited to this approach.

Yes. Have had a few careers, including as self-employed/consultant. All the while had a (fairly common) hobby. Got interested in one particular bit of the hobby, used T'Internet to wise up on it and then set up a business selling stuff for it. Had a gut feel there was enough of a market. It's doing OK, and I can't imagine not doing it.

Whatever it is, go for it.

Yes! The trick is to be very good at what you are offering. This can be evidenced by formal study and qualification to vast swathes of experience picked up whilst an 'employee'. You then need to research the potential Market and assuming you can leap any barriers to entry that may exist, then go for it. It may be challenging at first, but will certainly get easier over time.
