Ok, this is going to sound a little stupid but...

I worked for a company for 18 months or so, left in March. This company didn't have physical payslips and they were just online - not printable and now I've left I have no access to them.

I'm applying for a new mortgage so asked them for payslips, they said my P60 should suffice. I've therefore just been checking though and the P60 says what I've been paid is about 10 percent less than what I should have been on.

My new job has a slightly lower basic wage (higher bonus), checking what they're paying me monthly and what I was previously getting I'm actually getting more per month after deductions from the new place than the old. This is obviously worrying as it should be about £20 less!

I'll obviously speak to my previous employer tomorrow, we're still on good terms, but is this just 'one of those things' and I should have noticed it earlier? Am I able to ask for the back pay? I know I should have noticed it sooner but I'm terrible if things aren't on paper in front of me...

If you're on good terms and you think there has been a genuine misunderstanding, you have nothing to lose by raising the issue; but you'll have to be specific about the outcome you are looking for. Good luck!

Searching my memory, but doen't a P60 only show taxable gross, if you were making a tax deductable pension contribution would that show on the P60? Could be the 10% 'missing'.

Did you have a salary sacrifice arrangement?

The more I think about it the more I think I must have misunderstood I think, the payroll manager is/was very very competent so I'm sure it's something else I've missed. I still consider her to be a friend so will call her up for a natter and ask for her assistance later on.

Have two theories - one is that it's to do with the pension deductions as suggested, in which case I need to get confirmation of my wages for mortgage reasons, or that it (for some reason) didn't cover the whole financial year - though surely a P60 should do?

It will be your pension. If you look at the final payslip for the year, add the amount you have paid in pension to the P60 figure you have and that will show your actual earnings for the year.

I get this query from employees every year when they see their P60 and wonder where the rest of their pay is smile
