changing industries

I'm at the point where I can't get any further in my current role and due to weak managers and an immoral colleague the longer I stay in my role the more my reputation suffers. So, I could find a position in another company doing the same thing but this is not resolving much as I don't like the direction my field is heading in. So, when I started out finding a job after uni 10 years ago I was looking to go into the finance industry and due a twist in circumstances I ended up in pharmaceuticals. I think now is the time to step from one industry to the other and get back on track.

I think my experience sets me apart from the other candidates that would be applying for jobs in areas such as project management but I feel the HR department will take one look at my resume (I'm in the US) and chuck it in the bin because they will not see Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs.

My wife suggested temp work for 6 months to get a foot in the door before going for a permanent role. Any other things i should consider and any advice in general?

If it gives you some encouragement my other half started out as a Commercial PM in a large Pharma based company and is now running programmes in banking. All in the space of 2 years.

Amongst other things: Sorted CV; on a programme of study related to new industry; make contact with specialist recruiters for new industry; attend annual convention/conference related to new industry and begin networking (night before, during and night after). Good luck!

I had my resume reviewed and they weren't to pleasant. But, I did expect that and I have gone to a resume writer and will see what they come up with. My wife is a project manager for Morgan Stanley so that should help with networking! I do not want her to do anything until my resume is up to scratch and I am ready foe an interview. Last thing I want is to make a prick out of myself and it reflect badly on her. Also, her role is more heavily IT based than I would like as I am more vendor management experienced. And finally, I don't want to be in the same group as one round of lay offs could be two pay checks gone!

I have updated my linkedin profile but I don't want to make it too obvious to my current employer I want out as they could make my life miserable. I have joined "theladders" which represent a certain level of position only but they have mixed reviews. I note they have a service where they guarantee a $100k job in 6 months. But, I don't think I meet their criteria of skills or gullibility. I am on Monster as well.

I suppose the main issue is that I'm not exactly sure what I want to do or more precisely what the job title would be. I saw a job that was for outsourcing for a bank. It really appealed to me because it was Identify a location in the world then set the office up and help hire the team before handing off the group. I would have bloody loved that job but I was rejected with out an interview (I blame the resume). If there was a job title associated with this as it is project management but it seems a bit more niche. My experience fits in perfectly with this as well.

I feel like I'm 16 again when someone says "what do you want to be when you grow up". Oh, and then of course there are the responsibilities of life that get in the way. I can take a package cut (Ow said like that it sounds painful!) but I would already lose my fully expensed car(everything paid including tax and personal tolls). So, taking into account other benefits as well, ideally I would need a significant salary increase just to break even. That isn't going to happen short term but is a goal long term.
