Hi folks,

I am not sure if anyone can remember my last thread ("Struggling to get a job in IT"). Well two weeks ago, I decided to spend a day working on my cover letter and C.V. It is now much better and more geared towards IT.

So this morning I got an email from one job that I applied for at the start of the month (Trainee Field Service Engineer). Now I do struggle with interviews (like most people I guess), but this interview is tomorrow at 2pm and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips?

Also, I have just spoken to the agency and there will be a multiple choice exam tomorrow on IT hardware, software etc. Has anyone done one of these before? If so, what sort of questions would they be?

Thank you,

Vince

The usual advice is to brush up on the company that you are interviewing with and have some questions for the interviewer as well.

When I interview people for Field Service I am looking for a person that is confident but not arrogant. They have to represent the company in front of customers on their sites. Being field service you are the face of the company and any complaints the customer may have about anything are going to come your way. If it is a sales company that you will be working for the sales people will have sold the dream and now you have to deliver it. This can be a challenge to some and when faced with problems they buckle. I want an independent person that I can trust to be going to work in the morning but also to raise their hands when things are going wrong before it is too late. You should be able to talk about situations where you had to drive a situation and resolve problems. Depending on the set up it may be beneficial to say you can work in a team to utilize the senior engineers as resources and hope to be a resource to others quickly.

Sell yourself well but do not over sell as you may be found out. I have had people explain technical workings of products and it was total crap. oh and shut up for god's sake! Some people think that it is good to talk for ages on a topic. I can tell you I am bored. Mostly during an interview I am looking for a personality that I think will work with my customers. The most intelligent people do not make the best service engineers. The ones that can listen to customers do. I can train the rest.

Oh and you better not be interviewing with me tomorrow as I will probably call you out on it!
