Ok so far:

One interview, job taken off the market, so no feedback, and another friend got the job a month later. Good for her as better location for her, but would have been nice to get feedback.

Another job, I have the job, but need final sign off from boss. I have been waiting a month and a half now.

Another job. Went to first stage interview, but the role was lower than advertised to me. He has me in mind if they require people with more experience.

Another job, they had people with full qualifications, so they were better. But feedback was good, on this occasion.

Another job, though to second interview, feedback was good all-rounder, but going with someone else. Anyone got any ideas on how to improve from that feedback? This one was good, as gave me the train fare for the second interview.

Another job second was great, they want me, but needed to complete assessments. These should have been done before the second. Anyhow first time round my internet dropped out, and after a week they still haven’t got the thing online again for me to complete.

I was going to put a load of expletives in here, but just wanted to get the frustration off my chest. I have now wasted five days holiday and a lot of money in petrol. I am obviously good as am being offered the jobs, but things are going wrong on the companies’ side.

Is anyone else going though this?
P.s.I could really do with a holiday!

Just remember it is a big game, just think yourself lucky you don't have scumbag agents involved too!

If you are getting interviews you are doing better than most!

I think that there is often no time pressure on employers as for many business isn't flying and they have a big pool of candidates.

I have recently been chased by a Head Hunter for a particular role. When I saw him he said the role had been advertised and he had over 200 applications (senior role) of which about 5 were possibly suitable. There are a lot of people looking.

Indeed, I'm at the "job applications rant" stage and getting absolutely no feedback on anything - to be fair this is all via agencies rather than direct applications though so I think it's considered normal to hear nothing.

I'd be lucky to find 6 jobs in my area of work to apply to!

Good luck, you're getting 2nd interviews so can't be far wrong. There's a lot more people competing now, so probably not helping.

We hear a lot on the news about hundreds of applications for every job, but this story of blueg33's is typical of the reality. 200 apps and 5 possibly suitable, of which maybe 2 will turn out to be really suitable. So in the end 1 out of 2 qualified applicants gets a job. 195 no-hope speculative CVs go straight in the bin.
The way for anyone to increase their success rate at getting interviews is to apply for jobs they are qualified to do. So many people seem to think they have some small chance of getting any job if they pop a CV in, but it isn't true at all. I've advertised jobs with clear experience and qualifications required, and had applications in from people who meet none of the requirements. They are never ever going to get invited to interview. Nor will I spend the time writing to them all to say why not.
None of this is pointed at OP, BTW, who clearly targets his apps well.

hers ;-)

Thanks for that and it does seem that I am having a lot of succes in terms of interviews, but it is a waste of time, money and holidays if the jobs are not actually there at the end of the process.

How do you work out if they are speculative in seeing people they might want in the future?

+1

I'd add that in a lot of cases it's easy to spot the generic CV, sent en-masse to loads of places. Some applicants even forget to change a specific CV by leaving the prospective job title somewhere in the text. Needless to say, unless the candidate is outstanding for other reasons, these also usually get binned straight away. If someone blatantly can't be bothered to tailor a CV to the job, forget it.

Based on my experience last year, if you don't get a response within 24 hours, consider it dead and find something else to apply for...

Frustrating process, but keep at it.

Unsure on this. I've waited longer to be given the nod due to the boss needing to obtain the budget to pay me, and with my current role as he travels so much he's rarely here to sign off.

If this is via an agent, I reckon it's likely their %fee is the issue.

Agent at fault for misaligning expectations.

Can't win 'em all, but at least this sounds like you were actually sent for the right job.

You can't improve on this, You just didn't "fit" right. Quirk of personality or whatever, or the other candidate was more personable. Impossible to give advice on this without interviewing you tbh.

A week isn't long, bearing in mind the roaring pace at which HR races along.... If they've offered you the job, speak to the hiring manager to ask if they can give them a nudge. Be proactive, don't go via the agent.

Anyone using agencies will be yes. You've got 2 offers on the table though and are not currently unemployed. A lot of people would be grateful for that.

Just to make matters worst, it is of course obvious I am looking due to random days off. There are also three other people in the department who are looking.

The boss can see the pattern.

The offical line is only one person allowed off at any one time, so will start to get even more difficult to get to interviews now.

Why are you looking?

Take a guess?

To be honest it isn't just that the atmosphere that is rubbish though.

I like using my brain, because of the reduction of staff, I have been moved back to the tactilal work which is incresing as more people leave.

I need a challenging role and there are two many managers here, so i have no way to move up.

My point was, if it's obvious - will the boss do something and offer more £, or is it going down the plug hole?

Some things take time. The job i do at the moment I applied for in June, heard nothing until I was invited for the first interview in Octover and started in December.

It was via an agent who sent me a case of wine a christmas - he must have got a good fee smile
