Questions for Project Co-ordinators

So I need to go into a new role, purely because mine is being made redundant in a few months. I have looked into becoming a Project Co-ordinator in my company (Telecoms) as a new role is coming up in my department. My current department is a customer service based area, which does not currently have any PC/PMs in it, but will do following a new structure.

Our company does have a dedicated project delivery area full of PCs/PMs which I have liaised with in the past. In the other area they do have a policy of bringing all the PCs up to Prince 2 Practitioner level. In my current department, it doesn't look like they will be offering this.

My aim is to do the PC role for a few years, then hope to move into a PM role.

My question is this: How many others have gone from a PC->PM role, and how long does it normally take? Is Prince 2 normally required? If I have to pay for Prince 2 myself, how much does it generally cost?

For those contracting as PC; How easy is it to get work normally? I do often see a lot of PC roles in the telecoms/IT area advertised constantly, but not sure what the demand is for these jobs?
