Just mulling a few things over in my head, thought I’d see what others thought.
I’m a town planner (doesn’t have much bearing on matters, but background is always good). I currently work for the state government, have been for the past 1.5 years. Prior to that I was in the private sector for 5 years, working for the same company.
I earn good money in the public sector, and have job security, but I’m getting sick of public servants being unable to make a decision and actually do anything. I like getting out and talking to people and achieving things. Plus, I hate not being busy and having variety of work.
I have had a call from my previous GM who has set up her own business. She wants me to come in as manager of planning. There is no real job security like I have now, but I am being offered similar to slightly more money (not the main driver in my decision), the ability to work from home, variety in work, plus equity in the business.
The downside is that it is an hour drive from where I live. The upside is I will be going against traffic.
My heart says go for it, me head is telling me to be mindful of potential economic downturn. But, I work in a shortage field and there is always options around.
Thoughts? As you can tell I am very tempted.

This would become or soon bring about ball-breaking of lackadaisical attitude for me.I enjoy arriving at work in my underwear some days, having stopped by the fridge on the way downstairs. I wouldn't want to drive for an hour each day unless it was to collect a suitcase of cash or a car full of free supermodel hookers.
If you wanted risk and 100% of the profits working for yourself, think what could you achieve with those two hours every day, 10 a week or 40 hours total a month.

On the upside I could work from home 3 days a week and then set up the office in central Sydney. I can write my own position. The job is not advertised. Only I have been offered it.

How long is your current commute? Much difference?
20 minutes by ferry across Sydney Harbour. That is what I'm going to miss most!
I've arranged a meeting to discuss all the details. Looks like a goer. We work well together.
It's a risk, but if it all falls over, I can get another job easily enough.
Cheers
