Retirement an redundancy

I have heard of a couple of cases recently where a company has made a position redundant within a few months of a person reaching retirement. Seems odd to me, why would they do that?

Before the person retires? Better than a gold watch, no?

After? Now the expensive redundee has gone, they can rationalise the processes.

Because the default retirement age has gone and this is just a way to circumvent it?
