Hi,

I am thinking to start working as self-employed leafleter (both hand-to-hand and door-to-door) in London but I am not sure if a license is required. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks

There's a well-known woman round my way who does it - most of her business comes from Estate agents.

I see her out sometimes in all weathers. She told me that she scrapes a small living from it, but nothing more. She is constantly going round all the local businesses touting for work, but more and more of them these days tell her that they don't do leaflet drops anymore because they don't really work and they're too much of a non-targeted 'scattergun' approach to advertising.

They are telling her more and more that they get better results paying for targeted advertising online now.

There is no license or anything legal like that required.

Good luck!

Fortunately, many shops and takeaways still need leafleting smile

Thank you

Well as I say, good luck, but I don't recall receiving a separate leaflet from a local shop for years - the only leaflets I receive are take-away menus, and they are delivered by the shop's staff during the day. How do I know this? Because I often see a car pulling up on the estate, out of which decamps five chinese / indian chaps who I recognise from the evening counter staff, all clutching handfulls of leaflets. Off they go and blitz the estate, and then bugger off in the car again to the next estate.

Restaurant and take-away owners are unbelievably tight, trust me. They will not pay someone to deliver when they have their own staff to do it for them as part of their employment. How do I also know this? Because a mate of mine designs and supplies leaflets to them via his take-away middle man business - www.y4food.co.uk There's also www.just-eat.com who do the same.

And the few shop leaflets I get are inserted into the local free newspapers, as the rags are getting increasingly desparate for revenue and offer such cheap deals for leaflet inserts as to make someone going round on foot especially delivering look very expensive in comparison.

As someone who spent 25 years in the print / media trade, and 4 years running a small business, unfortunately the one thing I learned is that lealfeting does NOT work and is not cost effectve. I hate to say it as it takes away print work from my colleagues left in the trade, but it is true.

I spent thousands doing leaflets, and I even tried posting them via targeted direct mail - i.e. getting mailing lists of people who were more likely to want my services than just random door drops. Hopeless.

But when I spent the same amount of money on targeted Google SEO and ads, the phone rang off the hook.

Sadly more and more businesses realise this now, and print and door drop leaflets are rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

I don't mean to piss on your ideas, but I hope this gives you a realistic insight into the market you may well be considering taking on.

As I said, good luck!

As per Mr Yacht, I know of a friend who made an ok living from this for a few years but recently closed after much decline.

Any leaflets that are still produced end up in the free press or delivered by staff. But as always worth a shot especially if can come up with a new angle, good luck

But targeted, high quality post cards, posted, are making an impact where e-mails are now failing; thus endorsing leafleting is on the decline as already stated.

Indeed, depending on the product/service and target, traditional, well-constructed letters can also do well (I've experienced up to approximately 10% response rate (orders!) in the past). A scatter gun leaflet approach may give you a 1% response rate at best (again, depends on the product/service and area).

Thank you for replying.

I know the leafleting is in recession and the takeaways usually use their own staff.

But I have offering "my services" over the last two weeks in a very weak (and free) way and I had 5-6 people interested. So, I think if I start offering myself in a diligent way I can achieve some work.

The point is, I have read something about the necessity to get a license, but I don't think all the leafleters are paying £100-£300 to each council/borough every year to carry out this job. This is my dilemma confused

I replied to your other thread.

Did I read correctly that you are offering to do it virtually free of charge?

As much as I approve of your desire to set up your own business, I think you need to work out your costs and how much you need to charge to make such a job worth your time.

No smile

I meant that my investment on marketing was £0 and 5 minutes (just testing). So, I guess if I invest some money and time advertising myself I could get some customers.

Thank you.

I would like to start as selfemployed rather than a company... for now.
