Oil and Gas based CV

Hi,

I am currently an Avionic Technician in the RAF and I am looking to explore other avenues outside the Air Force. I still have a potential 4 years left, however, the more i think about it the more I'd like to leave and find something a little more challenging.

At the moment I work first line on a Typhoon squadron, but I also have second line bay experience.

I am writing on here to find out if anybody has any advice on how Oil and Gas companies like CVs to be written. I have not applied for any jobs as yet, but I have heard through various people that companies in that industry like to see CVs laid out in a certain way, although these people don't seem to know in which way that is.

Also are there any suggestions as to which companies are good to work for/helpful toward ex-forces?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

We encourage our main manpower contractor (Wood Group Engineering) to recruit some industry entrants from the forces and have had quite good results in the past taking folks in from there. This would be for instrument type positions for someone with your background (my own background is instrumentation and control). Another avenue in would be via companies doing metering, I know several ex RAF tech folk who have went into that area, companies like Metco and SGS Redwood are/were active players in this area.

As the other poster has said, things like ROV/general survey work is also an option and is an area of the industry that seems to be pretty busy at the moment.

I've been in ROV for a relatively short time now and my only regret is that I didn't do it decades ago. I spent far too many years working my nuts off fixing hot-rod aeroplanes for various governments, as the pay degraded year after year. My last aircraft agency hasn't raised it's rates in 6 years.

I now work on a semi-sub drilling rig. Out of the six regular ROV crew on my rig, three of us are ex-RAF. Two fairies and one heavy. It isn't uncommon to meet subsea engineers who are ex-RAF aircraft techs as well.

You don't necessarily need contacts to start in ROV. I didn't. I just responded to an advertisement on one of the oil & gas websites. The company was running a recruitment drive for 20 trainee ROV Pilot/Techs at the time. They apparently had 600 applicants, from which they short-listed 80 of us for interview and apptitude testing.

Sorry for taking so long to get back on here, we have a pretty iffy internet connection at work.

Thank you guys for your responses, they have been extremely helpful. The more information I can get the better. The CV is done now, just ready to get it sent out to some people, and I'm going to hand it to a few mates I know offshore.
