Job Offer Saudi Arabia

Mrs M has just recieved a telephone call from a company recruiting nurses for the Ex-Pats in Saudi. Good money for the correctly qualified staff, much much more than here.
So Mrs M is interested as you can imagine - and answers the questions with some keeness. However it is all gone when she asks how the family accompany her - to be given an answer that the job is only for single female nurses. There is no way of husbands/boyfriends or children to go with her. We all have to stay here.

Seems strange to me - sinister even. They did quote they had her CV from Total Jobs. Anyone experienced anything similar?
Mrs M did say the company was three letters, beginning with "K", but she was a little weary and did not really hear the name properly. When Mrs M did say she was not prepared to leave her children they said "ok sorry", and hung up!

well i guess she isnt going anyway if your not ....i wouldnt advise u going anyway aswell ...as heard saudi isnt a very fun place unless you like law and order and no booze

Arab men are renowned for being decent, non rapey/grabby and all for equality so give it a go, what could go wrong?

Sounds very dodgy to me personaly, why would they only want single nurses unless they're expected to offer a bed bath with a happy ending.

Not to mention women having total equal rights in Saudi, there's no gender discrimination whatsoever!

Women are not allowed to work on KSA, so my guess is this will be in a large International Companies Compound where the rules are somewhat relaxed. I think that no matter where the job is, the women cannot sponsor spouses.

Its Ok for the men to sponsor their spouses though.

Women are allowed to work in KSA and many of the nurses in the hospitals are females. However, women are supposed to be 'escorted' by a male (relative/husband) when out and about so it does seem a bit strange for a company to be targeting single females.
Probably best given a wide berth.

My initial reaction was down the rapey prostitution line, and never actually thought about the inequality/women sponsor line, which actually makes sense for me, but not where the kids are concerned.

However they did ring off pretty damn quick.

Spent a fortnight in KSA surveying hospitals in 2010.

The majority of female nurses were single and from what they in KSA refer to as third nation countries; India, Philipines, Pakistan etc...

To say they didn't seem to have much of a life is an understatement. Not sure how much they were being paid but the accomodation they were living in was beyond appalling, think I still have any photo's if you want to put your wife off big time!

Worked in Saudi a few times in the late 90s and I have to say that of all the countries I have visited, either through work or holidays, it is the only one that I would gladly never have to revisit.

Having said that I bet my next job is back there and I would have to say yes as I am running out of cash. Mind you I did say no to a job in Cardiff this weekend.

There's nothing suspicious or rapey about it, KSA employs hundreds, if not thousands of foreign nurses, from all around the world. I'd imagine all of these jobs, like most of the oil and gas jobs, are on a single basis. Why wouldn't they be? Is she mixing up a job on a 'single basis' with actually being single?

As a Brit, her accommodation would almost certainly be of a better standard than the 'emerging nation' personnel, but it wouldn't be more than a dorm. As far as I can tell, foreign nurses pass the time by drinking moonshine and banging other expats.

The recruiter was just trawling for interest.

OK I wasn't in Jeddah or Riyahd, it was some hick town in the mountains on the Yemen border but for a Westerner there was absolutely bog all to do on our days off and the rules that had to be adhered to were just too much for a Britisher and I'm not talking about the no booze situation.

Friendly though most of the people were I just couldn't stand the hypocrisy especially as I know what the Saudi locals get up to when in London Town.

Their rules fair enough but I just couldn't wait to leave.
