Job searching.

Hi All.

I'm 40 and been out of work for a few months. Tried to get something on the go myself - but doesn't look like it is going to materialise so need to put all thoughts of self employment aside and make a salary for the next 6 months until something I have lined up in September begins.

Have a varied working background - most recently business process improvement / project management for a smallish (180 employees, £150m t/o) company. I'm quite adept at being a go-between between programmers/IT and system users - but have no real programming skill myself. Before that I started and ran a business for a few years before the industry it was in began to decline.

Have a Mech. Eng Degree - but never practiced in the 20 years since graduating, so I think that is out - but never say never.

Not a salesman - so sales is out.

Apart from the direct.gov job pages (which seem to be full of local govt admin jobs) what are the best rated online search sites?

Based up in Leeds if anyone needs someone bright, commercially aware and adaptable for the next 6 months.

IF you do use Jobsite, beware of the hundreds of e mail replies looking for a UK resident,with a bank account to be one of their managers. Been established on here that it's a scam .Best of luck.in spite of all HMG bulls**t about dropping the age barrier ,it ain't happening.

Is it my imagination, or are there THOUSANDS of jobs out there?

Seems to be no shortage of advertised jobs.

Are most of them just CV mining?

www.totaljobs.com is pretty good.

You'll find most jobs are advertised on five or six websites at a time, and then they harvest other websites for jobs and get duplicates themselves. There also seem to be a lot of jobs in recruitment that could well just be recruitment aqencies using up a monthly allocation of adverts on the websites.

But jobs are definitely out there; I've had three or four interviews in the last 8 weeks for a fairly niche field.

Good to hear there are some non-programming PMs getting work.

I basically fell into business process management and IT project managing and ran two 18 month projects in parallel. I seem to be quite well suited to it as I understand much of the limitations of the programming side and I understand the user/customer requirements too.

My better half is a senior PM for a telecomms company based down south which is moving into IT.She does no programming whatsoever.

Anyway,they have recently had their northen PM resign and are looking for a replacement.Infact I know she was looking at CV's today(Wednesday).

If you want I can ask her if she would be interested in looking at your CV?

It's a full time permanent position.
